NAAC ACCREDITED B+ Government College for Girls, Sector-42, is situated in southern part of Chandigarh- the City Beautiful. The College with its impressive building and rich infrastructure caters to the academic and professional needs of girls not only from Chandigarh and adjoining rural areas but also from different states of India. The college was established in the year 1982 with Arts and Commerce faculties and was initially located in the school building in Sector-19, Chandigarh before it was shifted to its present campus in the year 1987. At the initial stage there were 300 students and 20 teachers in the college. The science faculty was added in the year 1989. The college is affiliated to the Panjab University, Chandigarh. A twenty seven year old college, serving the cause of women empowerment, has entered the stage of confidence and optimism.

A touch of community life amongst the students leads them not only to grow in awareness towards community needs and aspirations but also towards emotional integration of the nation. This college provides education in the faculties of Arts, Commerce, Science (Medical, Non-Medical, Biotechnology, Bioinformatics, Microbiology,Computer Science and B.C.A.)and Post-Graduation in English, Public Administration ,Sociology and Zoology . As many as 150 subject combinations, to the tastes and needs of girls, are available in the arts stream. It also provides Honours courses in thirteen subjects. Besides, two vocational courses in the subjects of Functional English and Principles and Practices of Insurance and Career oriented Courses in Bioinfotmatics, Environmental Auditing , Tourism and Event Management are also provided with the assistance of U.G.C. These courses are of placement value. C-Toss programme was established during the session 2004-05 in collaboration with I.T. Department of Chandigarh Administration.

There are 100 regular and 54guest faculty members who provide quality education to about 3000 students. As many as fifty seven Ph.Ds and thirty six M Phils provide a special glamour to this institution in terms of academic excellence. Seventy non-teaching members provide assistance in better functioning of the college. The college is well versed with the schemes and programmes of UGC like Development Plans, Travel Grants, Teacher Fellowship Awards and Research Grants are availed of by the faculty members from time to time. The college also has three units of N.S.S. and one unit of NCC (Army Wing) and many subject societies. The competent faculty, huge infrastructure, newly constructed canteen, well equipped library, vast space for playground and well established hostel go a long way in preparing the students self-reliant and self-disciplined citizens of India.

Other co-curricular and community-friendly activities like vermicomposting, college magazine “SHIKHAR”, Alumni Association ,Placement Cell, Women Cell add to the development of the personality of the young girls. The students of the college have brought laurels to the college in the field of academics, sports and co-curricular activities at the local and National level. Many of them are also well placed in responsible positions in society after they have passed out from the college. It could be accomplished by imparting of relevant knowledge and values by competent staff, community life in the hostel and provision of extra curricular activities with emphasis on spiritual domains. We inspire the students to diligently follow the college motto ‘Higher Still’. The college motto` Higher Still` is the guiding spirit behind our achievements and efforts towards excellence.
