Government College of Education, previously known as Government Post-Graduate Basic Training College, was founded in August 1954 under a special scheme of Government of India in the Second Five-Year Plan for establishment of training colleges for teachers at the post-graduate level. The College has great tradition of high achievements in the field of teacher education and ranks among the leading colleges of education in the country.
The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) has accredited Grade ‘A’ to this College. The National Council for Teacher Education has sanctioned 25 seats for M.Ed. (General), 300 seats for B.Ed. and 20 seats for B.Ed. in Yoga. A UGC Sponsored Post Graduate Diploma in Yoga Therapy has also been started with 25 seats.The college has spacious campus containing well maintained lawns playgrounds and separate hostels for boys and girls. It provides excellent library service. The Government Model High School and Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 20-D work as experimental schools for the college Government yoga health organisation, which has its own building in senior 23-A is a part of this college and is under the academic control of the Principal.
A number of dimensions have been added to the teacher training programme so as to make it as comprehensive as possible. The syllabus prescribed by the Panjab University, Chandigarh is enriched by seminars, workshops symposia, community activities, educational camps and numerous modes of other practical work.

Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.)
Admission to B.Ed. is done through Joint Entrance Test conducted by Panjab University, Chandigarh. Applications for Entrance Test are invited from the desirous candidates by publishing advertisements in the leading newspapers. All the requisite details of Entrance Test and the eligibility criteria are notified and made available in the prospectus published and issued by the University/institution as authorised, to conduct the Entrance Test, by Chandigarh Administration, Chandigarh and as per NCTE Norms.
After declaration of the result of the Entrance Test, the eligible candidates are called for the interview as per counseling schedule through the leading newspapers. Candidates are required to reach the venue of counseling well before the time and fill in fresh application forms (available at the place of counseling), complete in all respects (in his/her own handwriting) along with all the required documents and submit the same to the admission committee at the time of interview.
The admission to B.Ed. Course is made on the basis of the relative merit of the candidates in the Entrance Test, subject to the availability of seats in a particular subject combination, as per rules and as per reservation policy of Chandigarh Administration, Chandigarh.
A candidate applying in the reserved categories shall carefully indicate his/her claim for only one category in the admission form. In case the candidate wrongly indicates claim for more than one reserved category, the one claimed in the first instance shall be considered. No change of category will be entertained/permitted in the application form or otherwise at a later stage.
Admission in the B.Ed. course is subject based. At the time of admission each candidate shall opt for two teaching subjects. A candidate can opt for only those teaching subjects, which he/she has studied at graduation/post-graduation level.
Candidates who have passed additional subjects at graduation level must ensure that they are opting only those teaching subjects marks of which are taken into account for the purpose of calculating the percentage of marks at the graduation level.View Details Duration: 2 Year Learning Mode: Full Time Course Level: Bachelors Degree

The admission is done strictly as per N.C.T.E. norms through an entrance test conducted by the Panjab University, Chandigarh.
