Training Ship Chanakya is a shore-based academy managed and maintained by the Govt. of India, Ministry of Surface Transport through the Directorate General of Shipping. The three year degree course here culminates in the award of a B.Sc. (Nautical Sciences) degree from the University of Mumbai. It also imparts training for three months Pre-sea course. The cadets who successfully complete training at this institute are eligible for taking up jobs not only on board Indian ships but also on foreign vessels. It is common knowledge that trained Indian Merchant Navy officers are in great demand the world over, for their proficiency, expertise and dedication to their profession. It is noteworthy to mention that the Nautical Training imparted in this institution is of a very high quality and in accordance with the standards and norms laid down by the international bodies like the International Maritime Organisation.

T.S. Chanakya is the shore based successor to the Training Ship Rajendra and the grand old lady of Indian Shipping, Training Ship Dufferin, where the training of Merchant Navy Officers in India started in the year 1927. Training on T.S. Dufferin and subsequently T.S. Rajendra continued till the year 1993. After that it was replaced by shore based academy Training Ship Chanakya. It is the first pre-sea training institution in India. Originally, it was under the Directorate General of Shipping, Mumbai in the Ministry of Shipping. In 2008, This campus came under Indian Maritime University. In 2017, it was named as Navi Mumbai Campus.
