The Government Law College was established in 1885 and gained affiliation to the University of Bombay on 4 September 1860. This pioneering institute has played an immeasurably important role in the judicial, political, social and historical background of India.
Men like Dr B R Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian constitution, Justice M C Chagla, Former Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court, Lokmanya Tilak, freedom fighter, Sir Motilal Setalvad, the first Attorney-General of independent India and many other prominent personalities have left their footprints behind for time immemorial.
The name Government Law School was changed to the Government Law College in 1925. The Government Law College happens to be the oldest institution in the city, being even older than the University of Mumbai and even the High Court. It has the proud distinction of being closely associated with the history of justice. This oldest legal institution in the country, has also the distinction of being among the few Indian law colleges on the Internet. Its students are from various cultural, social and economic backgrounds, many from overseas.
The College is affiliated to the University of Mumbai. The Government Law College admits students for courses in law prescribed by the University of Mumbai, in accordance with the rules of the Bar Council of India. It provides all the support and guidance a student needs to achieve his full potential. It is one of the premier institutions of law in India today.
Any discussion of the India's legal system & legal culture today is incomplete, in fact, meaningless without a mention of the Government Law College. If one look back over the years, One becomes aware of the immeasurable role this pioneering law institution has played in the judicial, political, social life and historical background of India.
The legal luminaries who have walked thriugh its portals touch our lives even today. Great man like Lokmanya balgangadhar Tilak (freedom fighter), Dr. B. R. Ambedkar (the architect of the indian Constitution); Chief Jutice M. C. Chagla (the first Indian Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court), Sir Motilal Setalvad (the first Attorney General of Independent India), N. A. Palkhiwala and many other Prominent personalities have left their footprints behind for all time to come.
