Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan is a cultural institution founded in 1939, by K M Munshi, with the blessings of Mahatma Gandhi. Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan has 17 branches spread all over India, with its head office in Mumbai. Besides publishing cultural books and periodicals, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan runs schools and colleges also all over the country. Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan has many other activities like conducting Sanskrit classes, art workshops, and running research libraries. It has also opened professional colleges for journalism, management, and engineering.

Kulapati K. M. Munshi founded Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan in 1938 with the blessings of Mahatma Gandhi.
The Bhavan was established around the time when freedom was not in doubt; the question was how soon. With freedom round the corner, people were concerned about the New India that would emerge soon. Munshiji not only dreamed of a resurgent India he also felt the need to work towards it. This resulted in the founding of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan.
The Bhavan has its roots firmly embedded in the Indian soil but its spreading branches reach out to encompass the best of the modern world in the fields of science, technology, economics and management. The Bhavan is a unique institution where Sanskrit classes are found side-by-side with engineering colleges; Gita classes function along with the institute of management; traditional teaching of fine arts as well as the teaching of modern science, arts and commerce is found in its schools and colleges.
The Bhavan reaches out to the world through its value-based publications members over 1800 under the banner, Bhavan's Book University. This includes the publication of its fortnightly journal, Bhavan's Journal, and other periodicals.

‘Bhavan's Journal,’ one of India's most popular periodicals, is brought out by Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan.Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan is an Indian educational trust. It was founded on November 7, 1938 by Dr. K. M. Munshi, with the blessings of Mahatma Gandhi. The trust's programmes, through its 117 centres in India, 7 centres abroad and 355 constituent institutions, cover "all aspects of life from the cradle to the grave and beyond -- it fills a growing vacuum in modern life", as Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru observed when he first visited the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan in 1950.

The Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan is a totally apolitical organisation. Munshi looked upon the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan as an "adventure in faith", a faith not only in India's past, present and future, but also in India's people who have a rich and unbroken cultural heritage. The Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan believes that there are elements in all cultures which transcend all barriers and knit people together. Its ideal is Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, which means "the world is one family"
