Mary Matha College symbolizes the realization of the dreams and aspirations of the people of the tribal, minority concentrated and backward hill-district of Wayanad. The College is established in 1995 and is managed by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Mananthavady with the objective of meeting the higher educational needs of the youth of Wayanad. His Excellency Rt Rev. Dr Jacob Thoomkuzhy, the then Bishop of Mananthavady, was kind enough to take upon himself the onerous task of establishing and managing the Institution. His Excellency Rt. Rev. Dr. Emmanuel Pothanamuzhy was consecrated as the Bishop of the Diocese, in 1997. As the founder Principal of the Christ College, Bangalore, he had long years of experience as a Teacher and Administrator. His vision and commitment to academic excellence were guiding beacons in our Institution's efforts to achieve its Social and Educational Goals. His Excellency passed away in 2003 and subsequently His Excellency Rt. Rev. Dr Jose Porunnedom became the Patron. The College is heading for accelerated growth and expansion under his benevolent leadership.
Mary Matha Arts & Science College, Mananthavady is situated on a beautiful hilltop on the Mananthavady-Mysore Highway amidst the sprawling greenery of the Western Ghats, one of the crucial bio-diversity hot spots. The major reason for selecting this place as the site for the College was to provide a pristine pollution-free environment to the students, conducive to academic activities.
The Students’ Union, NSS, NCC, the Bhoomithrasena Club, Women’s Cell, the Central Library with its Book Bank Facility & the Network Resource Centre, the College Canteen, the Mentoring System, the Counseling Cell, the Career Guidance and Placement Cell, and the Scholarship Processing Cell offer Student Welfare Services across the Campus. The College has undertaken quite a few Extension Services like the Maithri Community Development Programme, the Karunya Charity Mission, Employment Training Programme for Tribal Women and Community Radio Service in association with the Radio Mattoli.
Systems have been created on the campus for the Student Community to imbibe values of Social Commitment. The Academic Community observes the College Anthem in the morning in order to respect the College and the National Anthem in the evening as a mark of respect to the Country, which offers tremendous individual freedom.
The most significant and revolutionary practice on Campus has been holding the Students’ Union Elections in the Parliamentary Mode following the Lyngdoh Commission recommendations, braving initial resistance, to ensure violence-free atmosphere on the campus. The Project on English Newspaper Reading, PEN-R, launched in 2006, has been proved successful in inculcating reading habit among the entire students of the College.
The Certificate Course in Communicative English, offered by the Department of English aims at training the students in the use of English for academic and interactional purposes. The system of maintaining the Work Done Diary of the Faculty, the Diary of the Class Representatives, Separate Registers for recording the Achievements of both the Faculty and the Students etc. have added special flavor to the flourishing co-and extra-curricular activities on the Campus.
Mary Matha provides an excellent and salubrious environment for the students to get the best in Wayanad with outstanding opportunities to make the most of their intellectual potentials. As a Christian Minority Institution, it endeavours to inculcate in them human values and social commitment as envisaged by Jesus Christ. It considers education not just as a search for knowledge, but as a great mission in which both the teachers and students participate in the process of developing human resources for the benefit of the society and the nation. The College seeks to instill in the students an awareness of their social rootedness and encourage them to be active agents in the construction of a just social order after its stated Motto, Vision, and Mission. Though a minority institution, the College includes in its purview the educational aspirations of the community as a whole, irrespective of religion, caste, and social status.

The Department of Statistics started functioning in the college on 01-11-1996 when Ms. Geetha Antony Pullen joined as Lecturer in the Department. Since then, it is offering its services to the Department of Mathematics and from 1999, to the Department of Computer Science. The students in the Department has produced good results in the previous years.

The Department of Chemistry is functioning from 2005 under self-financing stream and is offering B.Sc chemistry as a main degree course with Computer Science & Mathematics as subsidiaries and Chemistry as subsidiary for Zoology (main) students . The well-equipped laboratory provides facilities for advanced research in various areas of chemical sciences.
The Department of Chemistry started with 23 students, 4 teaching faculties and 1 lab assistant . The Chemistry Department is running under the valuable leadership of Dr.Rajeev Thomas (M.Sc, B.Ed ,M.Phil, , Ph.D) Reader &Head of the department.
Along with their regular classroom learning and practical work,
students also do a supervised project work. Every year they are taken on a study tour to places/institutions of scientific importance with a view to improving their scientific/research aptitude and skills.
Chemistry department conducts seminars, video shows, slide shows etc. in connection with students-oriented scientific activities. Students actively participate in various extra-curricular activities. Students are interested and involved in the social and environmental matters of their communities, too.
Teachers of the department attend Orientation and Refresher courses periodically as part of their continuous learning and to improve their effectiveness as teachers. Teachers also attend seminars, workshops, , awareness programs, coaching classes etc with the same objective.

A full-time degree course is conducted in the department with Chemistry and Biological Techniques as subsidiaries. The Department of computer science established on July1995 .The Department of computer science offers a degree course in computer science with Mathematics and Statistics as subsidiary subject .The Department offers computer science as subsidiary in UG classes to first and second year students of BSc Mathematics and Chemistry and second and third year students of B.Com. The Department of computer science have two permanent teachers and five guest lectures and one Technical Assistant. One faculty is on FIP
The Department has excellent laboratory facilities in the most modern computing environments. At present the lab has LANs with Windows NT and GNU/Linux servers with 45 nodes. The students have round the clock access to these facilities including internet facility.
The department courses with their most advanced syllabi provide the students a strong academic foundation to advanced areas in IT studies. The practical component makes the student proficient in programming, enabling them to be competent in the growing software industry. Guest lectures by experts in IT, seminars, workshops symposia etc. are regular features of the Department programme.
