Admission Notices

    Calicut Regional Engineering College was started in September 1961. It is the ninth of its kind and the first one to be established during the Third Five Year Plan period. The college is a joint and co-operative enterprise of the Government of India and the Government of Kerala and is visualised as a national institution imparting quality technical education and fostering national integration. It is administered by a society registered under Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860. Under the constitution of the Society, the college is governed by a Board of Governors which consists of the representatives of the Govt. of India, Govt. of Kerala, UGC, AICTE, University of Calicut, Faculty of IIT/IISc and Industrialists/Technologists in the region. The Chairman of the Board is the Minister of Education, Government of Kerala and the Secretary is the Principal. The college is affiliated to the University of Calicut.

    The Regional Engineering College, Durgapur, was established by an Act of Parliament in 1960 as one of the eight such colleges aimed to function as a pace setter for engineering education in the country and to foster national integration. It is a joint venture of the Govt. Of India and Govt. Of West Bengal, and is administered by an autonomous Board of Governors. The Minister In-charge of Higher Education of the W.B Govt. is the present Chairman of the Board which includes representatives from the Central and State Governments., AICTE, UGC, University of Burdwan, IIT Kharagpur, Industries and the Faculty.

    The college is located about 160 KMs north-west of Calcutta on the Howrah-Delhi Railway-Route and overlooking the great Grand-Trunk Road. The college spreads over an area of 187 acres of land. It is fully residential and co-educational. At present about 1250 boys and 150 girls reside in five boys' hostels and one girls' hostel. The annual undergraduate intake is about 330 students. The college is affiliated to the University of Burdwan, which awards B.E., M.Tech and Ph.D. degrees to our students after their successful completion of the specified courses. The college imparts education in the disciplines of Chemical, Civil, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical, Electronics and Communication, Mechanical and Metallurgical Engineering. Following a procedure laid down by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Govt. of India, Regional Engineering College, Durgapur, selects candidates for its own admission and 16 other RECs who admit such students on the basis of state wise quota. The college reserves two seats for admission of physically handicapped candidates from W.B. in addition to its normal intake. A number of seats are also reserved for Scheduled Caste/Tribes candidates from W.B. and also from other state on state-wise quota. Seats are also reserved for the wards of personnel from paramilitary forces who have been killed or permanently disabled during war or hostility.

    In addition to its sanctioned intake a few seats are also reserved by the Central Govt. for foreign students etc. Ministry of External Affairs, Govt. of India and the India Council of Cultural relations are the authorities to select candidates from the children of the staff serving in Indian missions abroad and the candidates for general cultural scholarship scheme, TCS of Colombo plan and Commonwealth scholarship etc.

    The college imparts under-graduate technical education of four years duration leading to B.Tech degree and post-graduate education of one and half years duration leading to M.Tech degree, both in semester pattern. In addition a three year (6 semester) Master of Computer Applications (MCA) programme is also offered. The college is a recognized QIP Centre for post-graduate programmes and is an approved research centre of the University of Calicut. The college offers Ph.D programmes in all the departments. The college is situated 22km east of Calicut city on a 120 hectre area.

    The annual intake of Calicut Regional Engineering College is 370 for the UG course. In conformity with the policy of Govt. of India, 50% of seats (185 Nos.) for UG courses are reserved for candidates from Kerala and the remaining 50% are earmarked for candidates from other states in India for each state, based on population. The branchwise distribution of the 185 seats alloted to Kerala is as follows:

    Applicant should have passed the M.Tech or equivalent examination recognised by the University of Calicut in the respective branch.

    Master of Computer Applications

    Applicants should have passed all the subjects in the first attempt in First Class in B.Sc/B.Com/B.Tech of Calicut University with Mathematics or Statistics as one of the subjects of study, BCA of M.G. University, Kottayam or an examination of any other University or authority accepted by the University of Calicut as equivalent thereto. Candidates belonging to SC/ST are required to secure only the minimum pass mark in the qualifying examination. Admission to the MCA course is based on an entrance test conducted by the Calicut Regional Engineering College. Admission notification normally appears in July/August in every year, and the entrance test is held in September.

    Post Graduate Courses

    M.Tech Degree Course in Engineering

    Applicants should have passed B.E/B.Tech/B.Sc(Engg.) in respective branches. The admission to M.Tech Degree course shall be restricted to those who have qualified Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) or those who are sponsored by their employers. Two seats in each Department are also available for admission under the QIP of Govt. of India.

    Reservation

    One seat is reserved for son/ward of defence/paramilitary personnel who has become permanently disabled/ or has been killed during wars/hostilities. Two seats are reserved for candidates with outstanding proficiency in sports/ games. Only candidates who have participated at least at the University/State level will be considered.

    Reservation for the remaining 182 seats is as follows:

    Open merit 50%

    Regional Reservation 15% (In the ratio 5:8 for Malabar and TC)

    Community Reservation 35% (10% for SC & ST and 25% for other backward communities in accordance with the rules of the State Govt. of Kerala)

    Additional Seats

    Twelve additional seats are reserved for foreign nationals. These seats are reserved for candidates nominated by the Ministry of External Affairs (Students Cell), Govt. of India and directed to Calicut REC. In addition, 5% seats (17 Nos.) have been introduced for allotment to the self financing dependents of NRIs. Dependents of NRIs will be admitted on the basis of the Rank obtained in at the entrance test conducted by the college. No seats are reserved for science graduates.

    General Admission Requirements to the Seventeen RECs Admission will be strictly on the basis of the rank obtained in the COMMON ENTRANCE EXAMINATION conducted by the Controller of Entrance Examinations, Govt. of Kerala, Trivandrum.

    Candidates who have passed the qualifying examination from any institution located in Kerala, Lakshadweep and Kaindive Islands only are eligible to apply for admission to all the 17 Regional Engineering Colleges in India through Calicut Regional Engineering College.

    A candidate once admitted to any one of the RECs will not be allowed transfer to any other REC.

    Undergraduate Courses

    Applicants should have passed the Pre-Degree Examination of University of Calicut or equivalent examination, recognized by the University of Calicut with 50% marks in Mathematics and 50% marks in aggregate in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes/ Scheduled Tribes are required to secure only the minimum pass mark in the qualifying examination.

    However, a relaxation up to 5% marks will be allowed to candidates belonging to socially and educationally backward classes of Kerala whose annual family income is less than Rs.42000/-. Admission of eligible candidates from Kerala to RECs will be made on the basis of the rank obtained in the COMMON ENTRANCE EXAMINATIONS for Engineering, conducted by the Controller for Enrance Examinations, Trivandrum, Kerala.

    3 year Diploma in Engineering Certificate of the Board of Technical Education is not an eligible qualification for admission to the B.Tech(regular) programme of the University of Calicut.

    Age limit: Must complete 17 years of age on 31st December of the year of admission

    Last date for admission is 31st August of the year.
