Indian School of Mines (ISM) is a fully Resident and co-educational university located in the mineral-rich belt of India in the city of Dhanbad, Jharkhand. It was established in 1926 on the lines of Royal School of Mines, London. Today, it is a multi-disciplinary institute catering to a wide range of engineering and scientific disciplines and is considered among the best engineering institutes in the country.it was offered the tag of reputed '"IIT" in year 2000 (before IIT Roorkee), but due to some administration and alumni problem, it could not become IIT.But again the mission for converting it to IIT has been started. he Indian School of Mines is the only institute of its kind in India and has traditionally catered extensively to the mining, mining machinery, mineral and petroleum industries. Yet, over the years, other engineering disciplines have made their mark in their respective sectors and are now churning out some of the most talented engineers in India. ISM is rapidly improving its position among the top engineering colleges of India. It is consistently ranked among the top academic institutions in India. In the latest Outlook ranking of Top Engineering Colleges of India (June 2007), ISM was placed 8th, only next to its prestigious IIT-JEE league colleges, and BITS Pilani. ISM was established in the year 1926 by the Government of India on the lines of the Royal School of Mines, London to train mining engineers and geologists. Today, when when it is celebrating its platinum jubilee after nearly 75 years years of existence, ISM has grown to an internationall y reputed status in various disciplines.

ISM is located in the heart of the country's prime coking coal belt in Dhanbad, about 260 kilometres from Calcutta. ISM has a fully residential campus covering an area of 88 hectares. The Institution was located at Dhanbad in order to facilitate the mining education to be in close relation with the Mining Industry. For training in Geology, the province of Jharkhand and its surroundings are unrivalled in their variety of geological formations, in the multiplicity of structural and field characteristics and also in the diversity and richness of the metallic and non-metallic resources. The locational advantage of ISM is that it is situated at the core of the industrial base of the region which hosts a number of coal mines, steel, fertilizer, refractory factories, heavy machine building plants etc. It has a 88 hectare (203 acre) residential campus of its own consisting of graceful blend of old-world and new style buildings. The serene campus comprises academic buildings, student hostels, faculty and staff quarters, health centre, workshop, canteen and other infrastructural facilities for a cosmopolitan community. The School is about three kilometers to the north of Dhanbad Railway Station; altitude of the place is 212 m above MSL and average rainfall is around 148 cm; the maximum and minimum temperatures are around 40o and 7o Celsius, respectively. ISM has a fully residential campus covering an area of 88 hectares.

Today ISM has adopted the path of academic diversification. New branches of academic programs have been added to its traditional departments and new departments have been established to cater other industries in addition to the traditional mineral industry. ISM caters to the human resource needs of the Nation in the areas of Mining, Petroleum, Mining Machinery, Mineral Engineering and Earth Sciences besides training manpower in the related disciplines of Management, Electronics & Instrumentation, Environmental Sciences and Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Applied Sciences, and Humanities and Social Sciences. In due recognition of its vital role in the service of the nation, ISM was granted autonomy by the Government of India. It has a General Council - members to which are drawn from various industrial and governmental institutes, the Parliament and the Academia. The School has sixteen departments/centres, with more than 130 faculty.

The Background

With the Mines Bill becoming a law vide Indian Mines Act – VIII of 1901 the necessity for establishing a government college of Mining Engineering at some suitable place in India on the pattern of the Royal School of Mines was felt by the then Indian Government. The Indian National Congress, the leading political party that was perhaps the sole spokesman of the masses of those days was quick to endorse this view of the government through its resolution taken at the 17th. session held at Calcutta in December 1901. A committee consisting of mining experts under the Chairmanship of Macpherson, the Chief Secretary, Government of Bihar and Orissa was formed to study the system of mining education in England. The report of this committee was the main basis for establishment of Indian School of Mines at Dhanbad. The Government of India in 1920 decided that the proposed institution should be an All India Institution financed by the Central Government and be named Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad. The Indian School of Mines was formally opened by his Excellency The Vice Roy Lord Erwin on 9th. December, 1926.

Diversification and Growth

Up to 1967 it was a pure government institute where the faculties were recruited through the UPSC Selection Board. ISM had an All India Character and national outlook from the very day of its inception.

The all round achievement by the graduates of Indian School of Mines in nation building was duly recognized and the School was granted university status under the UGC Act in 1967. From 1996-97 the School came directly under the Ministry of HRD, Government of India with pay scales and perks to its employees at par with that of IITs/IIMs.

ISM Today

Situated in the heart of the country’s prime coking coal belt, 260 kms from Kolkata with a campus spread over 88 hectares the fully residential ISM has all the facilities of world class academic institute. What started as an institution to impart mining education has graduated into a full-fledged technical institution of international acclaim offering a host of programmes like B. Tech., M. Tech., M. Sc. Tech., and MBA. In addition the School offers M. Phil. and full as well as part time Ph. D. programmes, while also awarding D.Sc. as the highest degree of academic achievement.

The serene campus comprises academic buildings, student hostels and 100% residential facilities for faculty and staff apart from other infrastructure facilities for a cosmopolitan community. The School has links with reputed universities and institutes across the globe and has an alumni base all over the world. The School today is making foray into the newer areas of academic endeavours in tune with the changing times.
