The Department of Biotechnology at Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar was established in 1991 by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India and is a constituent of National Network of thirty plus centers imparting job-oriented training to the students in Biotechnology. The Department is offering a two-year degree programme leading to M.Sc. in Biotechnology since 1991 and also introduced M.Sc. programme in Bioinformatics from the session 2006-07. The department admits the students to a Postgraduate Biotechnology Programme through an All India Combined Entrance Test (AICET) conducted by Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi and university test for admission to M.Sc. Bioinformatics programme. The students selected through AICET in Biotechnology are awarded a scholarship of Rs.1200.00 P.M. throughout the two years of their study. The Department has well equipped teaching, research and computer laboratories for imparting training to the students and for carrying out basic/applied research in the areas of Biotechnology and Bioinformatics. The department is recognized by the university to carry out research for the Ph.D. degree in these areas.
