The Department of Zoology, one of the youngest departments under the umbrella of the Goa University was established in 1990. Within this small tenure of a decade and a half, the department is spearheading the cause of higher education in the animal sciences vis a vis vocational education in the applied/ allied areas of the discipline. The highly qualified faculty as a team is engaged in the frontier areas of research such as Tissue culture, Electrophysiology, membrane physiology, Lipid biochemistry, Human Genetics, Wetland biology, Environmental Biology and Biodiversity.
DST-FIST Sponsored Department
The department conducts masters course in zoology with emphasis in the core areas and also specialisation with respect to the recent trends and areas of local importance. It also provides facility for doctoral programme in areas of animal physiology, genetic toxicology, wetland biology,environmental biology, ornithology and human genetics.
Major Facilities include Environmental chamber, Animal tissue culture facility, Light microscopy, Freeze microtomy, Electrophysiology, Gas chromatography, Flurospectrophotmetry , Clinical Autoanalyser, Animal House, Coldroom, Lyophiliser, Liquid Nitrogen Plant, Image Analyser and UV - Visible spectrophotometry
The Department also offers the PG diploma in order to train the science graduates in job-oriented fields such as Clinical Genetics and Medical Laboratory techniques. The course has both theory and pratical componenets and is run in collaboration with Goa Medical College and Goa Pharmacy College. More details can be had from the department.
