Department of Vegetable Science
The department of Vegetable Science was established on January 31, 1995 after the bifurcation of the existing department of Horticulture. The department offers M. Sc. and Ph. D. degree in Vegetable Science with emphasis on vegetable breeding and production technology. The seats for post-graduation students are six in the M. Sc. Ag. and four in Ph.D.
The thrust areas are as follows:
Development of high yielding disease and insect-pest resistant cultivars with emphasis on development of hybrid and their production technology including protected cultivation to raise off season vegetables. The major vegetables under the research programme are Cauliflower, Frenchbean, brinjal , pea, tomato, okra, chilli, cucurbits, spices and potato. The department has been able to develop and get relased 34 vegetable varieties including four hybrids. There are several research projects funded by ICAR, Ministry of Agriculture & National Horticulture Board.
