Department of Entomology

Initially the department was a component of division of Plant Sciences (Mainly to teach entomology to undergraduate students). In 1964, it became a separate department within the college of Agriculture with an objective of achieving excellence in teaching entomology to under-graduate students, conducting problem oriented research on insect pests of agricultural importance, apiculture and sericulture and extending latest technology developed in the university to farmers. The department started M. Sc. (Ag.) Entomology and Ph. D. programme in 1970 and 1979, respectively. It now offers 5 courses in the U.G. programme and 25 courses in the M. Sc. (Ag.) and Ph. D. programme. This department has produced 225 M. Sc. (Ag.) and 70 Ph. D. students who have successfully taken up a career in Entomology.

The environmental and food security would remain the key issues confronting mankind in the new millennium. Therefore, efforts to increase the food production to feed the expanding population must relay on eco-friendly approaches to pest management. The integrated pest management concept is the hope of the future and would provide a springboard to sustainable agriculture.

The Department of Entomology, seriously concerned on the research activities based on (a) Economic aspect, dealing with Apiculture & Sericulture (b) biointensive insect pest management dealing with biological, microbial control research oriented crop management programme.

Providing training and scientific technology to the farmers for sustainable and integrated pest management for various crops including veg., fruit, field and ornamental.

A prestigious National project was started on the Networking programme on Insect Biosystematics in the Department.

To boost up the organic farming in Uttarakhand state for supply of various inputs in IPM is to be insured at the farmer’s doorsteps.

Human resource development & technology transfer of Modern Beekeeping to harvest maximum bee products for increasing farmers income in rural areas
