Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is a national level exam that primarily tests the comprehensive understanding of various undergraduate subjects in Engineering/ Technology/ Architecture/ Science/ Commerce/ Arts. GATE 2025 will be a computer-based test (CBT) which is being organized by the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru.
The exam will be conducted by Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Roorkee and seven IITs (IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras, IIT Roorkee), on behalf of the National Coordination Board – GATE, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education (MoE), Government of India (GoI).

About GATE
- Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is a national level exam that primarily tests the comprehensive understanding of various undergraduate subjects in Engineering/ Technology/ Architecture/ Science/ Commerce/ Arts. GATE 2025 will be a computer-based test (CBT) which is being organized by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Roorkee.
- The exam will be conducted by IISc Bangalore and seven IITs (IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras, IIT Roorkee), on behalf of the National Coordination Board – GATE, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education (MoE), Government of India (GoI).
- Qualified GATE score can be used for seeking admission and/or financial assistance to : (i) Master’s programs and direct Doctoral programs in Engineering/ Technology/ Architecture/ Science/ Commerce/ Arts; and (ii) Doctoral programs in relevant branches of Arts and Science, in the institutions supported by the MoE and other Government agencies. GATE score is also used by some colleges and institutions for giving admission to students without MoE scholarship/assistantship. Further, many Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) have been using the GATE score in their recruitment process.

Eligibility Criteria
Before filing an application process, the candidate is advised to ensure that he/she meets the eligibility criteria for GATE 2025.
A candidate who is currently studying in the 3rd or higher years of any undergraduate degree program or who has completed any government approved degree program in Engineering/ Technology/ Science/ Architecture/ Humanities is eligible to appear for GATE 2025.
Some Professional Societies/Institutions, which conduct examination in various fields of engineering, are given below.24 Aug 2024
- The Institution of Engineers (India) (IE)
- The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE)
- The Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE)
- The Aeronautical Society of India (AeSI)
- The Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers, including Polymer and Environmental Group (IIChemE)
- The Indian Institute of Metals (IIM)
- The Indian Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIIE)
Candidates who possess certification from any such professional societies must ensure that those examinations are approved by MoE/AICTE/UGC/ UPSC as being equivalent to B.E./ B.Tech./ B.Arch./ B.Planning, etc.
Candidates who have obtained/are pursuing their qualifying degree from countries other than India: Candidates must be currently in the 3rd or higher years or must have completed their Bachelor’s degree (of at least three years duration) in Engineering/ Technology/ Science/ Architecture/ Humanities.
Any candidate fulfilling the above-mentioned criteria is eligible to appear for GATE 2025.
Details of eligibility criteria are given below.
Note 1 : If a candidate is pursuing any higher degree or has already obtained a degree higher than that mentioned in the table below, the candidate will be allowed to appear for GATE 2025.
Note 2 : Candidates with B.Sc./B.A./B.Com. degrees (3-year program) desirous of seeking admission to Masters programs in IITs and IISc may refer to JAM-2025: https://jam.iitm.ac.in/.

Application Process
- Application for GATE 2025 must be submitted ONLINE (through website https://gate2025.iitr.ac.in/) by paying necessary application fee
Data Requirement for Filling the Online Application Form in GATE 2025
- Personal information (name, date of birth, personal mobile number, parents’ name, parents’ mobile number, etc.).
- Please note that the name of the candidate in the application form must exactly be the same as that in the valid photo ID, which the candidate MUST produce in original while appearing for GATE-2025 examination at the centre.
- GATE 2025 scorecard will be issued as per the name entered in the application form.
- Prefix/title such as Mr / Shri / Dr / Mrs / Smt / Prof / Capt / Maj / Lt / Col / Er / Ar, etc. MUST NOT be used before a name.
- Address for Communication (including PIN code).
- Eligibility degree details.
- GATE paper(s) / subjects and their codes in which the candidate wishes to appear.
- THREE Choices of GATE examination cities (from the same zone).
- Net-banking /debit card / credit card / UPI / wallet details for fee payment.
Documents Required for Filling the Online Application Form in GATE 2025
- High quality image of candidate’s photograph conforming to the requirements specified (See Brochure Section 4.4.7 A).
- High quality image of candidate’s signature conforming to the requirements specified (See Brochure Section 4.4.7 B).
- Scanned copy of Category (SC/ST) certificate in pdf format (if applicable).
- Scanned copy of PwD Certificate in pdf format (if applicable).
- Scanned copy of Certificate of Dyslexia (if applicable) in pdf format.
- Scanned copy of any of the valid photo Identity document: Aadhar-UID (preferable), Passport, PAN Card, Voter ID and Driving License (should have Name, Date of birth of the candidate and unique Photo ID number. This must be carried in original to the examination hall for verification)

GATE exam structure is also published by IISc Bengaluru. Important features of the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering are as follows. However check official website gate.iisc.ac.in from time to time for any changes in the exam pattern.
The exam pattern is as follows
- Mode of Exam – The exam is a Computer Based Test.
- Question type – The questions are (a) Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) (b) Multiple Select Questions (MSQ) and/or (c) Numerical Answer Type (NAT) Questions.
- Total Marks – Maximum marks in the exam is 100 .
- Exam Duration – The entrance exam is of 3 Hours.
- Language of Question Paper – The question paper is in language English.
Marking Scheme –
- Questions carry 1 mark or 2 marks.
- Negative marks
- For a wrong answer chosen in an MCQ, there will be negative marking.
- For a 1-mark MCQ, 1/3 mark will be deducted for a wrong answer.
- For a 2-mark MCQ, 2/3 mark will be deducted for a wrong answer.
- There is no negative marking for wrong answer(s) to MSQ or NAT questions.
- There is no partial marking in MSQ.
