MACCON was started by the MAC (Educational) Foundation in 1991 to be an adjunct nursing talent incubator to the 400-bed Voluntary Health Services Hospital. The college offers three popular courses - B.Sc. (Nursing) - 4 years, Post Basic B.Sc. (Nursing) - 2 years and M.Sc. (Nursing) -2 years. MACCON is affiliated to the Tamilnadu Dr. MGR Medical University and is recognized by both the Tamilnadu Nurses and Midwives Council and the Indian Nursing Council.

Nursing College Thiruvananthapuram, the pioneer institute in Nursing had its orgin as School of Nursing attached to General Hospital Thiruvananthapuram in the year 1943. The School of Nursing was shifted to Medical College campus 1954. Diploma programme in Teaching and Administration of 11 months duration started at University level with an annual intake of 10 students in 1960.

The College of Nursing is affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, offering the Degree course in Basic B.Sc. Nursing. The School and the College of Nursing are recognized by the Indian National Council.
