    Nursing College Thiruvananthapuram, the pioneer institute in Nursing had its orgin as School of Nursing attached to General Hospital Thiruvananthapuram in the year 1943. The School of Nursing was shifted to Medical College campus 1954. Diploma programme in Teaching and Administration of 11 months duration started at University level with an annual intake of 10 students in 1960.
    In 1963 School of Nursing was upgraded to College of Nursing with the starting of Post Basic course for diploma Nurses which was the first of its kind in South East Asia. In the year 1972, four year Degree Programme in Nursing was started at University level with an annual intake of 25 students. The present college building was inaugurated on 12th April 1972 by Dr. K. Balaraman Nair, then Director of Health Service.

    In the year 1983 along with other professional course admission to B.Sc. nursing programme was made through common Medical and Engineering Entrance Examination of Kerala with 25 admission, out of which 3 seats were reserved for male candidates. As part of 20 point Programme in Kerala a Special Component Programme in General Nursing and Midwifery started in the year 1984 with an annual intake of 30 students.

    The year 1987 is remarkable in the history of Nursing Education in Kerala with the starting of Post Graduatin Programme in nursing in Medical Surgical specialty with an annual intake of four students and selection was based on merit. In the year 1990, M.Sc. Nursing admission was made through entrance examination.

In the year 1990, M.Sc. Nursing admission was made through entrance examination. Annual intake of B.Sc Nursing was enhanced to 50 with 6 boys in the year 1992. Three more specialities namely Child HealthNursing, Obstetric and Gynechological Nursingand Community Health Nursing were started in the year 1996 with total intake of 16 students.

    College of Nursing had a golden opportunity to co-operate with Loma Linda University. USA, for manpower empowerment in Trauma Care in the year 1998. Male candidates were admitted to GNM programme programme from the year 1998. Male candidates were admitted to College of Nursing, Thiruvananthapuram is occupying a decorative position in the global map of Nursing institution with the starting of “Global Health Exchange Programme in Nursing” with Karolinska Institute, Sweden in 1999. Admission to B.Sc Nursing was made as per the Ranks list published by Commissioner of Entrance Examination irrespective of gender difference in the year 2002. In the year 2003, the annual intake of N.Sc Nursing students was enhanced to 60. The male candidates reservation seats for GNM course was enhanced to 6 in 2004. The year 2005 is memorable with the introduction of new syllabus of 3 ½ years of General Nursing and Midwifery including 6 months internship. Faculty Exchange Program under Linnaeus Palme Exchange Program started in 2002. In order to improve the quality of Post Graduation in Nursing and to promote research in various fields of Nursing in India. Indian Nursing Council, recognized College of Nursing Thiruvananthapuram, as the study center for Ph.D in Nursing as part of National Consortium in the year 2005. M.Sc (N) seats has been enhanced to 28 in the year 2005. As part of student exchange programme under L.P Exchange programme 3 M.Sc(Nursing.) students of Paediatric & Obstetric & Gynacology. A speciality visited Sweden in 2006.
