St.Joseph's College is an affiliated First Grade College of the Bharathidasan University. It was established in 1844 by the Fathers of Society of Jesus (The Jesuits). It was affiliated to the then Madras University in 1869. The College celebrated its centenary in 1944, sesquicentenary in 1995 and acquired the Five Star status, awarded by NAAC in 2000. Shrimati Indira Gandhi College has its origin in the long cherished desire of the National College Council to establish a college exclusively for Girls, to overcome the woefully inadequate provision for the Higher Education of Women , that existed in the town till the Eighties, with no college for women having been started for the last three decades and many deserving and intelligent girls being denied the privilege of Collegiate Education.
