Master of Library and Information Science (M.Lib.I.Sc), is a one-year professional postgraduate degree course in India. The professional study covers all the principles and practices of Library Science and Library Administration along with the current technologies applied to these processes. The study is designed to develop the knowledge and skills of Collection Management, Information System and Technology, Research Methods, Cataloguing and Classification, Preservation, Reference Statistics, database Management, Information Architecture and Knowledge of Library Management.
The aim of study program is to prepare candidates with adequate knowledge and skill related to the tools and techniques, information handling requires for the profession. The study is focused on theoretical and practical aspects of Principles and Techniques in an academic discipline such as Library and Society, Historical Overview of Library Development, Information and Information Science, Types of Libraries, Library Cooperation, Resource Sharing, Library Networking, Planning, Management and Acquisition, Strong and Maintenance, Computer Application to Library and Information Work, Managerial Aspects of Computerization.
The candidate has to complete Bachelor of Library and Information Science (B.Lib.I. Sc) or equivalent examination, with minimum aggregate 55% marks, such candidates are eligible to take admission in Master’s Degree professional study program.
This course requires study requires 1 year of the time period in India, It’s a Full Time professional degree course, but some candidates use part time, correspondence education program and also go for distance learning study option to earn this degree.
After the successful completion of master’s degree course, candidates can pursue for, M.Phil in Library and Information Science, Ph.D. (Doctorate in Library and Information Science) Degree or do specialization and research oriented work in their respective field.

One can be recognized as Librarian or Archivist and work as, Deputy Librarian, Information Architect, Electronic Resources Librarian, Integrated Library System Application Specialist, Junior librarian, Junior Information Analyst, Library Attendant, Metadata Librarian, Researcher, Professor, Lecturer (Library Science), etc.
