Department of Microbiology was established in the year 2001 with an intake of 30 students in M.Sc Biotechnology programme. However looking at the demand for trained microbiologists the seats were increased to 60. In M.Sc Microbiology programme students are acquainted with different fields of microbiology like agriculture, medical, immunology, molecular biology, biotechnology, food and dairy, biochemistry, environmental etc. The final year students are supposed to carry out minor research in one of the fields of microbiology. The research can be carried out in the department or in any National laboratory/institute. There is a well-equipped laboratory in the department and a proposal to develop a state of the art research laboratory for PhD scholars.

The department plans to start PhD programme very shortly. There is also a proposal to develop state of the art research laboratory so as to develop a center of microbiological research in the area.
