University Grants Commission sanctioned the establishment of "Vikram Space Physics Centre"during the first phase of IV Five year plant (in the year 1975), to launch research activities in the area of "Astrophysics/space Physics.

M.Phil. and Ph.D. Programmes
The department had started M.Phil. course in 1991, to impart specialized training in the area of Astronomy and Space Physics as well as in the field of Materials Science. These programmes are run in following specialized areas.
High Tc superconductivity
Non conventional solar energy (Materials for Solar-cells)
Microprocessor based Instrumentation
Astrophysical and near earth plasma
Heliospheric studies and solar terrestrial relationships
Astronomy and Astrophysics
The main thrust in the broad area of Astronomy and Astrophysics in this department has been to study the solar related propagation of disturbances in the interplanetary medium and their effects on our own magnetosphere as well as on the Galactic/Solar Cosmic Ray particles. The cosmic ray particles originate mostly in our own galaxy and traverse through the galactic matter and then enter in our solar system thereby getting affected by solar output and its variations throughout the heliosphere.
Polymer Ionics and Related Devices
Solid State Ionics has a long and rich past because it is the ionic crystal which has traditionally provided physicists a nearly ideal model system. From the basic research in the field of Solid State Ionics, the centre stage of research on ionic solids has moved to applied materials research with the realization of many technological applications which are not only simple in working but cost effective as well. This department, in recent years has developed a Solid State Ionics research group working in Polymer Ionics and related devices.
