Though Madhya Pradesh is richest in the archaeological remains and cultural heritage, teaching of the ancient history and archaeology was most neglected in the universities of the state. Looking into this discrepancy our department – the department of Ancient Indian History, Culture and Archaeology was established in the year 1984. The goals and objectives of the department art to provide the basic background of higher learning and research in the region, highlighting the grandeur, heritage and culture of the area in chronological order and develop the job potential for the region.

The department has set up a museum of archaeology. Though still in infancy it throws light on the evolution of culture right from Pleistocene period to CE 1600-1700. The antiquities exhibited have been collected mainly through the exploration and excavation conducted by the faculty members, students and technical staff of the department.
Our department has developed a fairly well equipped photographic lab to cater to its need of archaeological photography wherein we can make all types of photographs. It has prepared a series of photo albums of monuments (stupas and temples etc.) sculptures, megaliths, rock shelters and paintings etc.
The department houses a computer lab also. Staff and students specially enrolled for research are availing the facilities of this lab. Our students are trained in the practical aspects of computer. Besides, they have access to the computer centre of the university.
We have a departmental library for the benefit of faculty members and students including research scholars. Books, Journals and Periodicals are available to scholars. The department provides reading room facility also.
Exploration and Excavation
Archaeological explorations and excavations are the principal components of the department. Besides teaching, the department with the help of faculty members, research scholars and students undertake explorations and excavations in and around Rewa, Sidhi, Satna, Shahdol, Umariya, Panna, Chhatarpur, Tikamgarh and Mahoba.
Teaching staff as well as students of our department regularly take part in the research explorations and excavations. Some of our research scholars are getting fellowships from different agencies of repute. We have explored more than thirty new sites of architectural and sculptural importance revealing various phases of evolution of temple architecture of the Vindhyan region.
