Andhra University was established in 1925 and shared affiliating responsibilities with Madras University in the initial years. It was constituted by the Madras Act of 1926. The 82-year-old institution is fortunate to have Sir C.R. Reddy as its founder Vice-Chancellor, as the steps taken by this visionary proved to be fruitful in the long run. The University College of Arts was inaugurated on 1 st July, 1931. The University pioneered in introducing many new courses in Science, Arts, Management and Engineering in the country. The university has four constituent colleges. The college of arts and commerce is the biggest constituent college in the university with 28 departments offering 55 courses. The college of science and technology has 19 departments, which offers 44 courses. The college of engineering has 16 departments involving in undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. The college of law has been identified as an advanced center in law by University Grants Commission. The university has a school of distance education (started 1972). The school has 32 study centers across the state and a study center at New Delhi. The university campus has 19 hostels for men and 4 hostels exclusively for women that accommodate more than 4,300 students. Residential accommodation of 340 units of staff quarters is available on the university campus. The university also has three Health Centres, a homeopathy dispensary, three guest houses, a faculty club, an open air theatre and a campus school for the children of university staff.
The Department of Archaeology & Museums is a research oriented academic institution, the aim of which is to preserve ancient culture for the posterity through various activities such as conducting explorations, excavations at ancient habitiational and archaeological sites, conservation and preservation of excavated sites and monuments, conducting villagewise survey for registration of antiquities, identification of archaeological sites and collection of epigraphical material and identification of historical monuments for their protection. Establishment of museums in all the District Headquarters with a view to educate the people about our culture and its development through displaying artefacts in general and in particular of A.P. for knowing the cultural milieu of A.P. for which the Department is functioning with seven branches headed by the Commissioner.
