Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) along with state and central governments is working on upgrading the existing curriculum of B Ed. This will help in improving the quality of teachers in India. The report will be submitted to the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) for consideration. “The need of the hour is a revamped BEd curriculum. A panel with eminent academicians has been constituted to help redesign the syllabus in consultation with various state governments. We are also informally consulting the MHRD,” said TISS director S Parasuraman.

Dilip K Arora has been appointed as the new Vice-Chancellor of the Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST), Jammu. Dilip K Arora is a renowned Agricultural Scientist. Dilip K Arora replaces Shaleen Kabra. He was a Professor at Banaras Hindu University and has served as Director (Research Management position) of ICAR, New Delhi. He is also a Visiting Scientist, University of Idaho, USA, Institute of Microbiology, Poland, INRA, France, Gifu University, Japan, Lund University, Sweden etc.

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi is very serious in tackling unemployment amongst the youth on the need for skill development. "Both high and semi-skilled workforce is in great demand and the state must be able to produce a pool of skilled manpower to cater to the needs of various sectors," said Gogoi while launching a skill development programme.

Shena Aggarwal is from Delhi. Rukmini Riar secured second place. Prince Dhawan came third. Prince Dhawan has completed Master of Technology from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. The Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination, 2011 was conducted on June 12. As many as 4,72,290 candidates applied for this examination, out of which 2,43,003 wrote the test.

Dr. Amitava ‘Babi’ Mitra has been appointed as the President and Vice Chancellor of newly created VIT University, Jaipur. Indian Institute of Technology Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE) committee has decided to publish the checked optical response sheets (ORS) of every candidate. The answer scripts will be made available on JEE’s official website: http://jee.iitm.ac.in/. The answer scripts will be made available from Saturday i.e. May 5, 2012. Through this bold step of committee, candidates will be able to see their answers and analyze the correct responses and individual scores on the JEE website.

National Institute of Technology (NIT), Rourkela has been ranked 5th best university in India according to a survey conducted by Cybermetrics lab, a Spain based international research group. NIT, Rourkela ranks 1067th in the world. Dr. Srivari Chandrashekar, Head of Division of Natural Products at Hyderabad based Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT) has been shortlisted for coveted CNR Rao National Prize for Chemical Sciences for 2012-13. Chandrashekar has been selected for his contributions in the field of total synthesis of natural products especially of marine origin, and also in developing ecologically-viable green technologies useful for industrial applications in the pharmaceutical sector.

Anand Mahindra, the managing director of Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) Anand Mahindra has been nominated as new chairman of Indian Institute of Management, Indore (IIM-I). Jhunjhunwala had succeeded Bharat Forge Ltd chairman B N Kalyani as IIM-I chairman in 2007. Appointment of new chairman is done through the ministry and the matter is further discussed in meeting of the board of governors. Subsequently, appointment is confirmed. There are 16 members in the board of governors in the institute and 15 in the society of the institute.

The AMU Court has shortlisted three names for the post of Vice-Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) . The AMU Court is the highest governing body of the university. These three names has been forward to the President of India. The three shortlisted candidates were Lt Gen (Retd) Zameeruddin Shah, former IAS officer Noor Mohammad and former IPS officer Khalid Rizvi. The president who is the Visitor of the university will finalize the name out of the three names forwarded.

In a bid to enhance the autonomy of the IIT system, IITs will also be increasing the faculty strength from around 4000 presently to 16000 by 2020 enabling the creation of a large pool of high quality faculty and researchers to meet the demands of a nation in high trajectory growth.

A Central University will be established in Amravati, Maharashtra confirmed Union Minister for Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal. There are 40 existing central varsities in the country. While as many as 14 new central varsities were announced in 2008, most of them are still finding their feet. Land and location have also not been handed over for some of these even four years after vice-chancellors were appointed.

Haryana Education Minister Geeta Bhukkal informed that Haryana government has decided not to appoint teachers on contractual basis. “Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda ordered that the appointment of teachers would be made on regular basis and not on contractual basis in the state," Bhukkal informed. Haryana government has given approval for amendment in the Haryana Education Rules regarding this matter. Now the state will appoint teachers on regular basis, that will lay foundation for quality education in Haryana state.

Union Minister for Human Resource Development (HRD) Kapil Sibal rejected all the three candidates shortlisted by a search-cum-selection committee for the appointment of Vice-Chancellor in Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU). The minister said that the selected candidates are not 'ideal' for the top post. According to sources, many eminent people from prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) were not considered.

Parliament has passed a bill that will make way for existing six IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology) to grant degrees to the engineers that pass out. The Institute of Technology (Amendment) Bill, 2010, along with the National Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Bill, 2010, was passed by the Rajya Sabha by voice vote Monday. Both the bills have already been passed by the Lok Sabha. The bills were pending in the Rajya Sabha.

DMRC (Delhi Metro Rail Corporation) has canceled the selection for the post of Director (Works) that was going to be held today on 17th January 2012. The selection procedure is postponed due to administrative emergency. New Schedule will be issued soon by DMRC.

6 students from Gopalganj district in Bihar have cleared International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO) examination. The school is founded by IITians and it imparts education using latest technology. Six selected students will now appear for IMO's level 2 examination. Teaching takes place through skype. Computers are run by generators as there is no power in the village.

Delhi University (DU) is planning to stop re-evaluation from the year 2013. The university will continue rechecking of answer sheets. In rechecking the examiner would only re-total marks in the answer sheet.
