Located in Serampore Girls' College was founded on June 6,1981 to cater to the local demand for a Girls' College. Late Sm.Anita Devi, the noted educationist and the then President of West Bengal Higher Secondary Council inaugurated the college in the presence of Late Prof.Sambhu Ghosh,the then Minister for Higher Education, Late Bhabani Mukhopadhyay,formar Minister for Parliamentary Affairs,Govt.of West Bengal, Late Kamal Krishna Bhattacharya,the then MLA and Chairman of Serampore Municipality and other dignitories. Affiliated to the University of Calcutta and recognized by the Govt.of West Bengal and University Grants Commission, New Delhi, the college sent its first batch of students in Humanities Group for the Graduation Examination in 1983.Since the date of its foundation the college has marched forward heedlessly to fulfill its goal of promoting female education in this part of the suburb and shaping its students into citizens of high caliber and character through various academic ,library and cultural activities, periodically organized therein., Starting from a scratch, the college has grown into a very prominent educational institution with its affiliation in degree Arts and Science. At present the college has about two thousand students on its roll. It has achieved permanent affiliation to the University of Calcutta in 1981 and at present it has affiliation at the degree level in nine Honours and Fifteen general subjects. the smooth running of these departments are ensured by an efficient set of dedicated and highly qualified teachers. The college has also on its premises a well-stocked library, a reading room, well-equipped laboratories in Laboratory based Subjects, and computers for various departments including Education and Sociology. The students are also provided with excellent Library facility which is run by qualified and efficient Librarian and other Reading Room Advisors. The College has a thoroughly computerized office with an efficient set of non-teaching staff., The students have an easy access to the students' common room, canteen and Games Room. The college with its attractive buildings on large premises, is situated in between Serampore Court and Walsh Hospital. Its close proximity to Railway station and Bus stand ensures its easy accessibility., During its rather brief journey the college has received several grants and donations from various Govt. and Private Sectors. Apart from the State Government and University Grants Commision,several noted persons have extended their helping hands for the overall developments of the college. For the construction of new college building on the vested land, the college received Rupees Five Lakh from MPLAD Fund recommended by Prof.Sudarshan Roy Chawdhury (Ex-M.P.),Rupees One Lakh from M.P.LAD Fund recommended by Prof.Pradip Kumar Bhattacharya (Ex-M.P.),Rupees Twelve Lakh Eight Thousand Eight Hundred Forty Two from Government of West Bengal, Two Lakh Fifty Thousand from MPLAD Fund,recommanded by Late Akbar Ali Khandakar (Ex-M.P.),Rupees One Lakh from BEUP recommended by Dr. Ratna Nag(MLA).Moreover,G.D. Birla Medical Research and Education Foundation,Mumbai,donated Rupees Seven Lakh and Fifty Thousand arranged by Dr.G.L.Mundra,President of M/S Jayasree Textiles Ltd. For the construction of Aditya Birla Science Block.Late Girija Prasad Khetri also donated Rupees Fifty Thousand for the construction of college building.VIDYASAGAR BHAVAN and NETAJI BHAVAN are the two newly constructed blocks of the college.Prof.Satya Sadhan Chakraborty ,the then Minister-in-charge of Higher Education Department,Government of West Bengal,inagurated the new college building on March,2000.Mr.Ajit Mukherjee,Prof.Iva Bhattacharya and Mrs.Jogmaya Ghosh have donated books and furniture to enrich our college Library.The college has also endwment prizes for meritorious students of various departments..
