Savitri girls’ college established in 1972 was the outcome of two things – the logic of a situation and the need of an hour. The Burrabazar, an area of compact business communities for a long time grew into a nucleus of a growth on traditional Indian lines. The people around were linguistically Hindi - speaking. With the turn of the 20th century as in other parts of the country an outlook of modernity dawned in them. Education for women became a concern as a part of the agenda of marching time. Thus the Savitri Educational Charitable Trust was established and in 1905 this trust established Savitri Pathsala as a Hindi – medium school for girls.
In response to the long standing need for a Girls' College in the locality, the Trust decided to establish Savitri Girls' College in 1970 with a noble mission of imparting female education. Late H. K. Jhajharia and M. L. Jalan became the Secretary and President of the College after its inception in 1972. In course of three decades the seedling of a college has gradually developed into a full-fledged institution. It started with about 100 students. The roll-strength exceeded 700 in the late nineties and it has at present reached one thousand.
The present students mostly come from surrounding areas of the city and suburbs who have their roots in different provinces of India. They interact together and forge a common understanding. This creates an atmosphere of social unity, cultural harmony and national integration. Over the past three decades to meet the demands of the changing time, the institution introduced several new courses and programmes. Currently the college has two streams Arts and Commerce The College has an ideal academic atmosphere, free from all extraneous disturbances. The teachers are well-qualified and sincere and they aim at educating the students in order to develop their sphere of knowledge, intelligence, self-respect and culture - in short, to make them good citizens of India, who can both imbibe modernity and traditional values in their character. The teachers look after the academic interest of students and are engaged in different research works and projects. At present several UGC sponsored research projects are underway in different departments.Old students are welcome to join Sammilani, the Alumni Association of the College.
Mission of the College
The college started with the mission of providing education to the girls of neighbourhood. It was a take off into higher education much above the school level studies of Savitri Pathsala, the base institution of the college. It is a striking coincidence that the decision to establish the college in 1970 and its actual inception in 1972 are related with two historical events. The year 1970 coincided with the 150th birth anniversary of Pandit Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar and the year 1972 saw the celebration of the bi-centenary of Raja Rammohan Ray. Both the personalities were pioneers and exponents of women’s emancipation.
