Established in 1940 Muralidhar Girls College is one of first woman college in South Kolkata.
Early in 1940 a group of noted scholars and educationists residing at the first developing Ballygaunge in South Kolkata felt the need for a women's college in the area. Among them ware Rai Bhadur Gopal Chandra Ganguly,
Prof. Subodh Chandra Sen Gupta, Prof. Nalini Mohan Shastri. Among the many Problem faced by them ware funds, finding students and mainly a building for the college. The authorities Ballygunge Girls' School (Late Muralidhar Girls School) on Hindustan road agreed to house the fledging college in their campus. With very few students Ballygunge Girls' College officially began functioning on 8th July 1940, with Prof. Nalini Mohan Shastri as a Principal. However the college had to be closed down very soon because raging second world war. It reopened in 1944 and began functioning fully in the post war stabilization, never having to look back since then.
The college was affiliated to the university of Calcutta in 1945 and renamed Muralidhar Girls' College after Prof. Muralidhar Bandopakhyay Principal, Sanskrit College. Besides being an educationist, he was a celebrated scholar and a social reformist, He was actively involved in programs on women welfare and development of women's education. He was an active member of 'Nari Samunnati Samiti' and Bangiyo Samaj Samunnati Samiti' , campaigning for widow remarriage and inter-caste marriage in the 1920's.Prof. Banerjee's sons, Shri Hironmoy Banerjee, ICS, and Shri Suvamoy Banerjee a noted advocate, have acted as pillow of support, extending all kind of help for the growth and development of the college. Sri Sovamoy Banerjee donated liberally from time to time to the college fund helping the college to overcome financial crisis.
In 1957, with the help of a great from the Government of India, organized by Shri Hironmoy Banerjee, the then development commissioner, a three strayed building on Gariahat Road was constructed. In 1959, Muralidhar Girls' college, moved away from the third floor of Muralidhar Girls' School its own address, P411/14 Gariahat Road Kolkata-29.
Mission and Goal
The mission of the college is to extend educational facilities to all deserving students, including first generation learners. The ultimate goal of the college being empowerment of women, the institution has endeavoured to expose its students to emerging areas of knowledge. While constantly upgrading the curriculum, keeping in mind the modern academic methodology, the college insists on basic human values and endeavours to inculcate these in the students, helping them to enlightened themselves and evolve as responsible citizen of India. The motto, Atmadeepo Bhaba, inserted in the college logo, upholds the sprit of the college.
