The School of Information Technology has been started with the objective of promoting research and development, industrial consultancy, and teaching in the frontier areas of Information Technology. The School currently offers MTech, M.S. and Ph.D. programmes. The School also conducts the PGDIT (Post Graduate Diploma in Information Technology) programme in the distance mode at Kolkata, Bhubaneswar, and Kharagpur to facilitate cross migration to the field of IT. (Information Technology), M.S. and Ph.D. programmes; The School also conducts the PGDIT (Post Graduate Diploma in Information Technology) programme in the distance mode at Kolkata, Bhubaneswar, and Kharagpur to facilitate cross migration to the field of IT.

The M.Tech. programme is open only to students who qualify in GATE paper in IT or CS departments. More details about the curriculum of the M.Tech. programme is available here. The M.S. programme is open only to qualified staff of research projects and full time employees of IIT Kharagpur, and to sponsored candidates from a few government organizations.The Ph.D. programme is open to graduate/post-graduate degree holders in any discipline subject to the general regulations for Ph.D. admission to IIT Kharagpur. The PGDIT programme is open to graduates in any Engineering discipline. The admission to the programme is based on an entrance test that is conducted every year in April in several centres all over India.
