Following a procedure laid down by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Govt. of India, Regional Engineering College, Durgapur, selects candidates for its own admission and 16 other RECs who admit such students on the basis of state wise quota. The college reserves two seats for admission of physically handicapped candidates from W.B. in addition to its normal intake. A number of seats are also reserved for Scheduled Caste/Tribes candidates from W.B. and also from other state on state-wise quota. Seats are also reserved for the wards of personnel from paramilitary forces who have been killed or permanently disabled during war or hostility. In addition to its sanctioned intake a few seats are also reserved by the Central Govt. for foreign students etc. Ministry of External Affairs, Govt. of India and the India Council of Cultural relations are the authorities to select candidates from the children of the staff serving in Indian missions abroad and the candidates for general cultural scholarship scheme, TCS of Colombo plan and Commonwealth scholarship etc.
Durgapur is in the heartland of the famed Damodar Valley Corporation Project, with a barrage on the river Damodar and a thermal power station. In fact, in the foremost endeavors of independent India to gain self-reliance in heavy industries and competence in flood control and propelled by the vision of Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, Durgapur was in the thick of action with the DVC Project and Durgapur Steel Plant. With such an ambience, Durgapur is one of the best suited locations for an engineering college, with its frequent industry–institute interaction in teaching, research and training of the future engineers of modern India.
