The Electrical Engineering Department is currently the largest multidisciplinary department at IIT Kanpur. It covers practically all sub-disciplines under Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Communications. The Department offers B.Tech., M.Tech. and Ph.D. Programs in Electrical Engineering. It also conducts a two semesters specialized PG Diploma Program (DIIT) in Video Communication Systems for Doordarshan Engineers. The Department is well supported in infrastructure and research resources through the Institute as well as through various sponsoring agencies and some industry. Faculty are encouraged to take independent initiatives with collective responsibility in all the relevant academic and R&D dimensions - teaching, curriculum development, graduate research supervision, R&D, continuing education or organisation of conferences, symposia, etc. They have ample freedom to associate as members of team with other faculty, research engineers or with faculty in interdisciplinary areas. The PG students strength is being steadily enhanced to enable more opportunities for research. The Department has an open atmosphere with ample scope for faculty to work with other departments and centres within the Institute.
The Department conducts sponsored PG programmes for Defence, DRDO, Doordarshan and a select few others. It is getting increasing number of sponsorships from industry for attractive PG scholarships. In some areas, R&D cells from industry (for example one from Secure Meters Ltd. for development of Distribution Automation products) provide direct opportunities for advisory or consultancy for faculty. Faculty are encouraged to participate or bring in University Relations Programs (URP) from leading industry or organisations. Currently URP are available with Motorola, Texas Instruments, Silicon Automation Systems, Comdev Phase Group and Analog Devices.
Students have ample freedom to choose their major sub-disciplines and broaden their base through their choice of elective courses. Several sponsored projects in several of the subject areas with large interdisciplinary content are handled through the Advanced Centre for Electronic Systems (ACES). All Projects Staff - Research Engineers, Associates and Scientific Officers come under the cooperative umbrella of ACES. ACES encourages better awareness and cooperation across the different Projects and the Department. At the undergraduate level the department offers a four year B.Tech. programme in Electrical Engineering. While most of the courses in the first five semesters are compulsory, the courses in the final two semesters are all electives. Once the fundamentals underlying different areas of electrical engineering have been taught, students are free to specialize in areas of their interest, beginning in the sixth semester. The B.Tech. curriculum emphasises laboratory courses throughout. The project in the final year, which lays stress on independent design, is a culmination of the skills imparted in the laboratory courses.
At the postgraduate level the department offers a DIIT programme of one year duration in Video Communication Systems, and M.Tech. of three semester duration and Ph.D. programmes in various areas of Electrical Engineering. The DIIT programme is exclusively for sponsored category students from Doordarshan India. In case other organisation would like their candidates to go through this course, they should contact head of the department in this regard.
Department is also contemplating to start a new stream in the area of Photonics from next year. Considerable flexibility is available in the selection of courses in PG programmes. The postgraduate committee of the department plans the study programme for individual PG streams. Their are certain compulsory courses in each stream. Remaining courses are generally selected from the suggested courses for each stream. After the first semester, the thesis supervisors of PG students provide couselling for selecting the courses depending on the student's thesis and interest. In the DIIT programme, a student has to complete six courses. In the Master's programme, a student has to complete seven or eight courses depending upon the area. The M.Tech. programme culminates in a thesis which is normally in the area of specialisation of the student and has to be defended to complete the requirements of M.Tech. The most important part of the doctoral programme is research culminating in a thesis. The research should represent an original investigation on the part of the student and is expected to make a significant contribution to the knowledge in the subject. Sponsored research and development activities are pursued in the Advanced Centre for Electronic Systems (ACES), which is the R&D wing of the department. Work on problems of current relevance in electrical engineering involving latest technologies are carried out under these sponsored projects. Students can take up thesis problems which have relevance to these activities, thus enabling them to use some of the sophisticated facilities available in the Centre. The academic atmosphere is informal and marked by the freedom between the students and faculty members during discussions and research. Students are encouraged to generate their research problems through discussion with faculty both in and out of the class room. They have freedom to choose their thesis supervisors from the faculty members of the department and sometimes even from outside the department.
