University Department of Life Sciences (UDLSc) was initiated in 1981 with a view to promote an integrated approach to teaching and research in all areas of Modern Biology. Since 1987, it has been functioning in the present premises (University Campus) at Vidyanagari, Santacruz (E), Mumbai 400098. UDLSc is the sole Post-graduate teaching and research Department of the University representing all areas of Modern Biology. Various eminent Scientists and Academicians such as Professor Y.I. Shethna, Professor A.R. Kulkarni, Professor P. Narayanan, Professor D.A. Bhiwgade and Professor. U.S. Bagde have been associated with the Department which is currently functioning under the leadership of Professor M.H. Fulekar, as its Head.
Location & Accessibility:
UDLSc is housed in the beautiful Campus of the University of Mumbai located at Vidyanagari, Santracruz (E), Mumbai. Vidyanagari is barely 5 km from the Domestic and about 9 km away from the International Terminals of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Airport. It is mid-way between Kurla (Central Railway) and Santacruz (Western Suburban) Stations of Suburban Railway. From both the Train Terminus (Churchgate and Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus), one can reach Santacruz/ Kurla within 30 minutes. The domestic City Buses (BEST) with Numbers 313 and 318 shuttle between Kurla (West) and Santacruz (East), while those with Numbers 37, 91, 306, 374 and 449 originating from various locations of the City also pass via Vidyanagari.
One of the very visible contributions of UDLSc to Vidyanagari as also the researchers of Life Sciences is a Palm Garden located next to its building, featuring a large collection of rare species of Palms (about 20 in number). Faculty Members of the Department have painstakingly collected them from all over the Country.
