Located in The Govt Thoothukudi Medical College was started and functioning from 16.08.2000. Initially it was located inside the campus of Fisheries Department, Beach Road, and later it was shifted to the present Medical College block in 3rd Mile, Thoothukudi during the year 2001., The first batch of MBBS students were admitted during the academic year 2000-2001. In this college, Non-Clinical and Clinical departments are functioning. Sanction has been given for admission of 100 students for MBBS course every Academic year from the year 2000-2001. The seats have been increased to 150 seats from the year 2013-2014. During this academic year, 176 trainees are undergoing Compulsory Rotatory Residential Internship programme., 55 students are admitted and trained in the course of Diploma in Nursing from the Academic Year 2003-2004 and the intake has been increased to 100 from the year 2015-16. DMLT Courses of two years duration and One Year Paramedical Certificate Course Emergency Care Technician, Respiratory Therapy, Anaesthesia Technician, Theatre Technician and Orthopaedic Technician were started from 2005-2006 with the total intake of 100 students and 150 students respectively. CRA Certified Radiological Assistant Course was started from the academic year 2007-2008. Moreover in Nursing Assistant Course for both gents and ladies, 50 students are trained every year from the academic year 2009-2010., The following Degree courses of Allied Health Sciences such as BSc,-Medical Laboratory Technology, BSc,-Operation Theatre and Anaesthesia Technology, BSc,-Respiratory Therapy have commenced in our institution from academic year 2018-2019 with an annual intake of 20 seats each., In Thoothukudi Government Medical College Hospital, departments such as General Surgery, General Medicine, Ophthalmology, ENT, Paediatrics, Anaesthesia, Venereology & Dermatology, Thoracic Medicine, Psychiatry, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Orthopaedics, Radiology, Radiotherapy, Phsyical Medicine, Dentistry, Neurology, Gaestro Enterology, Cardiology, Nerosurgery, Plastic Surgery, Medical Oncology, Surgical Oncology and Anti Retro Viral Treatment Centre are functioning., From the year 2018-2019, our institution has commenced 4-Post Graduate courses viz. MD General Medicine 10-seats, MS General Surgery 10-seats, MD Paediatrics 6-seats and MS Obstetrics and Gynaecology 6-seats . From the year 2019-20, we have commenced MD Anesthesiology course with 8-seats and, MS ENT 2-seats, MS Orthopedics 3-Seats from the year 2020-21. We are also in the process of getting necessary permission from Medical Council of India to commence MD-Forensic Medicine in our college from the year 2021-2022. Besides the PG courses, we have successfully commenced Super Specialty Courses in our Institution from the 2019-20 with 2-seats for DM Neurology and 1-seat for DM Gastroenterology.
