Government College of Education, located at the heart of the city of Coimbatore, was started in 1956. Immediately after independence, when the need for compulsory education arose, separate schools for girls and separate colleges for women teachers were established. This college was started to cater to the needs of young teachers in emerging schools in the Coimbatore region.On 8.8.1956. Shri.T.T.Krishnamachari the then Central Minister for Industry and Commerce, inaugurated the college at a function presided over by Shri.C.Subramaniam the then State Minister for Education. The college was started with a modest strength of 75 students and 7 teachers Mrs.Shanmugasundaram was the first Principal.Initially affiliated to the University of Madras, the college got affiliated to Bharathiar University in 1982. The College was affiliated to TamilNadu Teachers Education University, Chennai from 01.07.2008. The college was upgraded to the status of College for Teacher Education in 1995 and from 1997 onwards the college has been under the purview of the NCTE.M.Ed. degree (evening college) course was started in 1973 for the benefit of serving teachers. (From 1993 the college has been offering M.Phil. and Ph.D. reasearch programmes on part time basis) The college stopped M.Ed degree course (evening college) in 2000 following orders from the NCTE. The College offers full time M.Ed. course from 2009-10.In the last 50 years 17 principals have led the college with dedication. The College is a centre for B.Ed. (Distance Edn. Programme) of Madurai Kamaraj University.

Our main objective is to provide quality education to the prospective teachers. We aim at moulding them with knowledge, skill and character contributing to the development of student community in consonance with our motto SERVICE, LOVE AND TRUTH. The college also strives to provide training programmes to teachers - in service in order to update knowledge of the subject, methods of teaching and technology of teaching. The institution gives equal importance to research in the field of education.
