Located in The Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda College occupies a place of prominence among the educational activities of Ramakrishna Mission in India. It was formally opened on 21st June 1946. To cope with the demand, an Evening college offering various programmes under unaided pattern was opened in 1974. These Day and Evening Colleges form a part of Ramakrishna Mission Vidyapith which also contains four other units, viz. 1. Ramakrishna Mission Vidyapith Hostel, 2. The Institute of Vivekananda Studies, 3. Vivekananda Institute of Tropical Mycology (VINSTROM) and 4. Vivekananda Institute of Algal Technology (VIAT).The Ramakrishna Mission was founded by Swami Vivekananda (1863-1902), the chief disciple of Sri Ramakrishna (1836-1886) in 1897, "to bring into existence a band of monks devoted to leading a life of purity and renunciation, and to carry on, with lay workers, religious, philanthropic and charitable activities, looking upon all men, women and children, irrespective of caste, creed, nationality and colour, as veritable manifestations of the divine". The Math and the Mission have today 166 centres in India and abroad, with their Headquarters at Belur, West Bengal. Swami Ramakrishnananda, a direct disciple of Sri Ramakrishna, established in Madras, now called Chennai, a centre of the Ramakrishna Order in 1897. The Ramakrishna Mission Vidyapith is an important limb of the Mission, devoting itself to educational and research activity. Ramkrishna Mission Vivekananda College is one of the better-known colleges in Chennai. Better known as RKM College, Ramkrishna Mission Vivekananda College is known for offering graduate, post-graduate and evening courses in a series of subjects. RKM College offers Bachelor as well as Master courses in BA, B.Com, B.Sc and other faculties. The college is also well-known for its various extra-curricular activities and clubs, which aim at encouraging students to improve both, personally as well as academically.the prime motive of imparting man-making and character-building education and combining the principles of secular knowledge and spiritual knowledge, Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda College made a humble beginning in June 1946, with 20 teachers and 339 students. The college then offered just 4 undergraduate courses. The college is presently offering 11 Graduate and 7 Postgraduate and research programmes under aided stream in the Day College and 8 Graduate and 2 Postgraduate unaided programmes in the Evening College. The student strength is around 3000. In 2003, the institution was accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council, New Delhi. The college was granted autonomous status to all Undergraduate and Postgraduate courses up to M.Phil. By the University Grants Commission in 2004-2005. Starting with just five rooms in 1946, the college now has a Main Block, a Mathematics Block, a Life Sciences Block, a Sanskrit Block, the Obul Reddy Auditorium Building, an Open Air Theatre, a Library Block (with 87,000 books: day, 8000 books: evening), a Sports Complex and a Prayer Hall. It has a lush green turf cricket ground, tennis courts, and a gymnasium with state of the art equipments. It has several well-equipped computer laboratories.
