To create awareness amongst the construction engineers about modern concrete construction practices, an International Seminar and Exhibition on ‘Modernization of Concrete Practices – ISEMCC-82’ was jointly organized by the Structural Engineering Research Centre and Anna University during 21-27, January, 1982 in Chennai. It generated great enthusiasm among the participants and a resolution was adopted at the conclusion of ISEMCC-82 to form the “Indian concrete Institute.”The Institute was registered as a society on 7th September, 1982 with headquarters in Chennai and has been in service to the industry and the professionals, since then, with the following objectives.
To promote growth of concrete construction and its sub-specializations.
To disseminate information and to arrange to train personnel for the needs of changing concepts in the technology.
To collaborate with national and international agencies in creating better understanding of concrete construction technology.
To indentify R & D problems of practical relevance to concrete construction technology.
To institute and distribute awards for outstanding achievements in concrete construction technology.
To arrange periodical seminars and exhibitions on the subject and
To arrange annual lecture series on selected topics of relevance to concrete constructions.
The institute has more than 9300 members. Individuals and organizations, working in the field of concrete and interested in the advancement of construction technology, in the use of material, equipment, process design, concrete products, construction, teaching or research are the members of the Institute. It is governed by a council of a President, four Vice Presidents, Nine Members and a Secretary General. To cater to the regional needs, 30 centres are functioning in major cities/towns across the length and breadth of India and these centres are managed by respective executive committees.
ICI encourages civil engineering students to start student chapters in their respective colleges and these chapters provide suitable platform to interact with practicing professionals in various disciplines, with an objective of reducing the gap between their knowledge and practice. This enables them to make a head start when they come out of the educational institutions and start their practicing 32 colleges have started ICI student chapters and this number is on the increase. Student members become eligible for various concessions offered by ICI.
The Institute conducts seminars, workshops and training programmes throughout the year on various topics related to concrete technology and the latest developments in concrete construction. ICI-IWC and ICI ACECON are two such international events organized by ICI once in five years. Experts in concrete technology from all over the world participate in these events and share their experience.
Large organizations avail in-house training programmes conducted by ICI to educate their personnel on best practices in making good concrete. Indian Concrete Institute also conducts number of artisan training programmes in various construction centres in India, on demand.
Concrete day is being celebrated by the Institute through all its centres, on September 7th each year, the day in which the Institute was formally registered as a Society. On this day special lectures are organized. In addition, centres also honour outstanding personalities for their contributions to the concrete technology and outstanding concrete structures are also awarded.
ICI has brought out a number of publications and monographs on topics of interest. ICI journal is a quarterly issue circulated amongst members, which carries valuable peer reviewed technical papers. This journal is under exchange circulation with a number of international professional bodies. A monthly e‑bulletin titled “ICI-update” is e-mailed to all its members to keep them abreast of the happenings in ICI at its various centres. This also carries selected technical papers presented in seminars & workshops for wider dissemination amongst members
12 annual awards are instituted by ICI to honour and encourage those who contribute towards meeting the objectives of ICI and these awards are presented at its Annual General Body Meeting at a special awards function. ICI shares platform with other national professional bodies like Builders Association of India (BAI), Construction Industry Development Council (CIDC), Engineering Council of India (ECI), Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Association of Consulting Civil Engineers (ACCE) etc. ICI has entered into memorandum of understanding with Singapore Concrete Institute and Concrete Institute of Australia to promote amongst members, cooperation and exchange of technological information and other mutual beneficial activities towards advancement of concrete technology, design and construction. ICI associates itself with “American Concrete Institute” and has representation in “Asian Concrete Federation” in various activities.
