Cancer Institute WIA was established in the year 1955, Cancer Institute WIA is affiliated to Anna University, Chennai
The Cancer Institute (WIA) established in 1955 is an autonomous charitable comprehensive care centre registered under the Societies Registration Act. In 1975, it was declared a regional centre of cancer treatment and research for the southern region by the Govt. of India, the first cancer centre to be so chosen.
The Cancer Institute is not a five star entity confined to the four walls of a polished multi storied building but is essentially a mission of service which reaches out to every nook and corner of the state.
Of the 70,000 and odd patients that pass annually through its portals 90% come from the Indian village. This process is now being sought to be reversed by carrying the message of prevention, detection and cure to the heart of the Indian countryside.
The centre piece of this new effort is the primary health centre (PHC) doctors, the village health nurses (VHN) and the block health educators. Since 1989 the Institute has in collaboration with th State health services, trained 437 VHNs, 30 block health educators and 266 PHC doctors under the peripheral cancer control programme. It has also established a training centre for the VHNs.
The Institute offered the superspeciality degrees of the M.Ch Surgical and DM Medical Oncology for the first time in India. It also offers the DMRT and MD courses in Radiation Oncology. The Institute is recognised by Dr.MGR Medical University, Madras University and Anna University for Doctoral studies in Oncology. The Institute is the only centre in the country for the M.Sc. Degree in Medical Physics of the Anna University.
Besides these degree courses, the Insitute also trains Radiotherapy Technicians and Cytotechnicians. Continuing medical education for the family physicians, general surgeons and post graduate students of the region is an integral part of the college activities.Cancer ,in the beginning of this century meant fear and death. In our country very few knew about Cancer, but for those who had the misfortune to see some one dear attacked insidiously, devoured slowly but surely, have had to witness the long – drawn – out agony of the last stages, except these, probably no one knew about Cancer. Vital statistics in our country was not accurate to know how many die of cancer every year.
