1946 Establishment of Plant Physiology Scheme at the Agricultural College and Research Institute, Coimbatore.
1963 Starting of M.Sc.(Ag.) Degree Programme in Plant Physiology.
1972 Plant Physiology unit under the control of Department of Agricultural Botany.
1976 Plant Physiology a full-fledged Department headed by Prof.J.Sakharam Rao.
1978 Starting of Ph.D. Programme in Crop Physiology.

Research :

The Department of Crop Physiology is collaborating with many national and international institutes for research on stress physiology, plant growth regulation, mineral nutrition and post harvest physiology. The scientists of this Department have obtained research projects from agencies such as DBT, DST, UGC, CSIR, CMPDI- Government of India, Foreign Agencies (IWMI, National Institute for Agro- Environmental Sciences, Japan),The Department has strong linkage with National and International Agrochemical companies such as BASF, Bayer, Novozymes South Asia, Sri Ramcides, Sumitomo Chemicals, TAC, SPIC, Coromandel Fertilisers, Biostadt etc.
