The Department was established in 1958, with Dr. Arya G. Tiwari as its founder Head and Reader. At present there are four faculty : one Professor, one Reader, one Senior, and one Junior Lecturer. Presently, it offers courses in M.A. and Ph.D. The Department focuses on Modern Indian History with emphasis on Village, Agrarian, Grassroots History. The Department has successfully sustained the practice of scholarly and research publications. It has not less than 18 books, monographs published in English, Hindi and Gujarati.
RESEARCH AND EXTENSION PROGRAMME UNIT :
The Department has established one Research and Extension Programme Unit in the year 2002. The aim of the Unit is to conduct research programmes on "Grassroots and Village History"; to collect source material for the research programme; to disseminate the knowledge of the subject in distant, mofussil and tribal areas of Gujarat. The Unit also conducts workshops and organises seminars and symposia for the benefits of history teachers and students.
Department has explored following areas of research:
=> Iconography in India.
=> Rise of Sardar Patel in Indian Politics.
=> Kheda Satyagrah.
=> Quit India Movement in Kheda District.
=> Socio-religious reform Movements in Western India during Modern times.
=> Arya Samaj Movement in Gujarat.
=> Agrarian and village History in Modern times (with special reference to kheda district.)
=> Grass root workers and Gandhian Activities in Gujarat during freedom Movement in India.
=> Historical survey of sites like Keshariyaji (Rajasthan) and Mandu (M.P.)
=> Historiography : Relationship between History and literature.
The Department has completed a number of research projects on village and Local History; and has recently initiated a searies of Projects on Women's History in Collaboration with the UGC Centre for Womens' Studies of Sardar Patel University.
An informal association of former students of the Department has been formed, which helps the department in academic and extension activities.
