It was in early 1920's that the then Maharaja of Patiala established an Ayurvedic school at patiala.This institution became a nucleus of activities in the field of Ayurvedic eduction and research in India.In 1952,this school was upgraded to Ayurvedic college,Patiala.It has gradually developed into an full fledged institution having facilities to impart education at graduate (pre ayurveda leading to BAMS Ayurvedacharya course) and post graduate, MD Ayurveda (Ram Shashtra,Bhaishaj Kalpana speciality and Dravyaguna speciality)level.The college is affiliated to the Punjabi University ,Patiala, An Ayurvedic hospital is attached to this college for imparting clinical training to the students.The hospital has and adequate indoor and outdoor facilities.It has 105 beds to cater to the needs of patients which are treated under different specialities.Training in identifiaction of herbs is provided to the students by the Dravyaguna department where the medicines of the natural growth are sown in the college grounds and in the adjoining areas.Study tours are also arranged to the areas of rich growth.Practical training in the preparation of medicines is provided in the Government Central Ayurvedic Pharmacy which is attached to this college.This institution thus aims at providing such a training to the students so as to produce graduates who can disseminate the knowledge of Ayurveda.The college has a well equipped library with over ten thousand books.There are two hostels(one each for boys and girls)in this college.
