Department of Economics
The Economics Department was set up as the Department of Political Economy and Political Philosophy in the year 1908. In 1960 there occurred the division of common department of Economics and Political Science to the separate Department of Economics and Department of Political Science. The Centre for Economic studies was set up in 1972. Autonomous P. G. teaching in applied Economics began in the year 2002. There is a very long list of distinguished alumni who have passed out from this department including Prof. Amartya Sen, Prof. Sukhomoy Chakraborty, Prof. Amit Bhaduri, Prof. Pranab Bardhan and many others who have excelled in their respective field of work.
