Department of Computer Science & Applications

The Computer Culture at the Panjab University dates back to 1966. An independent Centre for Computer Science and Applications (now a full fledged department) was set-up in 1983. The department aims at ingraining the spirit of ingenuity, innovativeness and technical competence in the students through rigorous competition and regular guidance. The department also caters to the need of users in the region and organizes training programmes for teaching and research communities.

Eligibility :

M.Sc. Computer Science : => BCA/B.SC.(H.S) Computer Science /B.Tech. / B.E.(Computer Science/ Engineering) or any other examination recognized as equivalent thereto with 50% marks. Admission based on PU CET (PG). Master of Computer Applications (Evening) : => The minimum qualification for admission to the first year of the course shall:(i) A recognized first degree of minimum three year's duration any discipline with at least 50% marks and with Mathematics at 10+2 or at graduation level (all three years):OR(ii) B.C.A. from Panjab University with 50% marksOR(iii) Any examination recogzined by the Panjab University, Chandigarh as equivalent to any of the above examination (i) or (ii)The admission is based on PU CET (PG) conducted by Panjab University, Chandigarh. Master of Computer Applications (Morning) : => The minimum qualification for admission to the first year of the course shall:(i) A recognized first degree of minimum three year's duration any discipline with at least 50% marks and with Mathematics at 10+2 or at graduation level (all three years):OR(ii) B.C.A. from Panjab University with 50% marksOR(iii) Any examination recogzined by the Panjab University, Chandigarh as equivalent to any of the above examination (i) or (ii)The admission is based on PU CET (PG) conducted by Panjab University, Chandigarh. Ph.D. Computer Science : => 1) Candidate should have obtained Master's degree From Recognized University the Master's degree with at least 50% marks.2) Candidates who have cleared P.U. Entrance test for Ph.D admission OR Candidates who have cleared UGC(NET)/ CSIR (JRF) Examination / SLET/GATE/Teacher Fellowship holders/direct award of Fellowship by DST (INSPIRE), ICMR or any other national agency or any other equivalent test.

Facilities :

The University is interconnected with the help of an ATM network and a Gigabit network with a fibre optic backbone cable allowing data rates of 155 Mbps and 1 Gbps. The backbone links 38 buildings of the Campus to the Department & Hostels. Central switches and servers provide high speed computing as well as Internet and e-mail facilities. Departmental switches in each of these buildings provide users access to Central Computing and the Internet, right at their Desktops. Internet has come to India in a big way. In pursuing it's tradition of keeping in step with modern technology, the department provides Internet access at a speed of 24 Mbps. The Internet connectivity is through ERNET & Reliance Communications. These facilities are available to the Panjab University Campus Community through a Campus Wide Network which has its centre in the DCSA .
