The Department of Biotechnology was started in 2002 with a vision to make an impact through research and technology based training. The mission of the Department is to provide academic training and conduct research in the interdisciplinary areas of biotechnology with a particular emphasis on extending the knowledge generated from these studies towards the development of technologies of commercial significance.

An herbal garden is maintained within the campus by the Department of Biotechnology which spreads on 0.25 acres of land where about 50 species of important traditional, medicinal and aromatic herbs are flowering. A state of art nanoscience lab is setup in the Department of Biotechnology funded by Consolidation of University Research for Innovation and Excellence in Women Universities (CURIE Programme), DST.
