The Moreh College College was established during the academic session 1992-1993 to cater to the higher educational needs of the people of the international border town of Moreh and the surrounding remote villages within the Chandel district of Manipur in the hills. The College is at present a Government Aided College, managed by the Moreh College Governing Body., According to the census of india 1991, the Chandel District of Manipur had a total population of 71,014 of which 85.52% belonged to the Scheduled tribes and 0.33% Scheduled Castes. According to the 1991 census, the Chandel District recorded the lowest literacy rate of 34.80% as compared to 47.60 % of the state of Manipur., This is a Govt. College viz, The United College at the district headquarter of Chandel which is located at a distance of 90 Kms from Moreh. Another Government Aided College viz, The South Eastern Manipur College, Komlathabi is there in the district at a distance of 75 Kms from Moreh. In view of the acute shortage of College in the Moreh area in the district, The Moreh College was established during the academic session 1992-1993 as the 1st Institute of higher education in Moreh area in the Chandel District.
