Department of BioSciences

The Department was established in 1983 as Department of Basic Medical Sciences, as one of the first five Departments of the university; offering M.Sc. Microbiology and B.Sc. MLT. M.Sc. Biochemistry course was later introduced in 1989. The School was renamed as School of Biosciences in 1990. Other M.Sc. programmes like the M.Sc. in Biophysics,M.Sc. in Biotechnology and M.Phil in Biosciences were introduced by 1992.

Sixty two PhDs have been awarded during the last 10 years with 114 publications in both National and International Journals. A good number of students, averaging 60% are getting qualified in the CSIR/UGC/ICMR/DBT/GATE National level tests/fellowship programmes every year. Scholars who have obtained Ph D from the school are being placed regularly in accredited national and international labs and institutions.
