Located in According to Babasaheb Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, “One of the Fundamental Functions of the University is to provide facilities for bringing the highest education to the doors of the needy and the poor”. He had given the Mantra that education was the only means for all round development of the poor and backward classes., He strongly felt that through education anybody could achieve the highest position in the society. Taking inspiration from Dr. Ambedkar our honorable Chairman, Dr. Madhukarrao Wasnik (Ex. MLC) came forward and established People’s Welfare Society. This society established its first college, named PWS College of Arts and Commerce, on Kamptee Road, Nagpur in 1967. This is one of the biggest and well known institutions for marginalized sections in North Nagpur., The very name of the college, describes the purpose behind it. Some facts are more amazing than fiction, like how Dr. Wasnik’s zeal to establish this institution made him give up his own land and dream of making a hospital on it. Initially the institution was built, near Indora Square on Kamptee Road, on a small piece of land, owned by Dr. Wasnik, while he lived in a rented place till 1995., Shouldering the responsibility of running a centre for higher education, especially in the North-East Nagpur, during the 60’s was an uphill task. There was very little awareness towards education, due to the hand to mouth conditions of the masses, around the area. Gradually a change dawned upon the people as various facilities of Reading Room, Scholarship, Low-cost education was provided by the institution. In 1980 the college shifted to its new premise only a few meters away from its old building. The increase in the intake of the college, substantially with many other facilities, like the centre for YCMOU, Sports, & NSS etc elevated it to a new landmark and it now caters to more than 4000 students on roll in junior & senior college. Since its establishment, the institution has not only changed the Socio-educational environs of North-East Nagpur, but also helped many ‘first generation’ learners to educate their families and provide better economic support., Vision, The institute envisions moulding of students who have humanitarian views, scientific approaches and are firm believer in positive social change. Such inspired youth will uphold the human values of liberty, equality and fraternity, and also shoulder the responsibilities of taking their nations to greater heights, Mission, To give advanced but affordable education so that the poorest of poor student could avail it., To promote marginalized students towards professional courses and all round development of personality., To create environment of research through various training programmes, class assignments, workshops,seminars, and projects., To undertake different educational programmes and projects jointly with other institutes for the benefit of students.
