The Lal Bahadur Shastri College of Advanced Maritime Studies and Research is a premier post-sea Maritime Education and Training Institute offering a comprehensive range of courses for Merchant Navy Officers. The college was established by the Ministry of Transport, Government of India, in 1948.
The college is housed in a modern seven-storied building situated on a six-acre site at Hay Bunder. The college building and its two adjacent hostel blocks overlook the picturesque harbour of Mumbai with its islands and the mainland to the east.
The college attracts a large number of students for maritime education and training. In terms of student turnover, this is one of the largest marine training institutions in the world. It offers about 31 post-sea courses which run almost concurrently. The courses meet the standards of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) as well as those of the Government of India. There are over 1200 students on the rolls at any given time. The college is fully equipped to meet the requirements of marine officers afloat and ashore. About 70% of Indian officers afloat are employed on foreign flag ships. This is because of the high quality of maritime education imparted to them in this institute and the subsequent high level of professionalism and competency maintained by them.
During the year l998 there was a spurt of foreign nationals attending courses in this college. Hence the Government approved a proposal put up by this college whereby fees charged from them is in US dollars for each modular course.
About THIRTY ONE COURSES are run concurrently. The number of students who enrolled for the Competency and Modular Courses from 1/4/98 to 31/3/99 was over 17,000 including foreign nationals.
The total number of faculty members in this College is 60 of which about 50 are deputed by MMERT (Merchant Marine Education and Research Trust).
The College is about l.5 k.m. from the nearest railway station 'Reay Road' on the Harbour line of Central Railway and it is adjacent to Tata Oil Mills. It can be reached by BEST bus Nos. 161, 168 and also by the College bus at routine timings.
