The Department of Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science was formed in 1993 by merging the erstwile Department of Metallurgical Engineering and the Interdisciplinary Group in Materials Science. The Department offers academic programmes leading to the B.Tech., M.Tech. and Ph.D. Degrees. At the undergraduate level, the curriculum provides a strong background in conventional materials like ferrous and nonferrous alloys as well as advanced materials like electronic materials, ceramics, polymers and composites. At the postgraduate level, specialisations in Process Metallurgy and Materials Science and Engineering are offered.
The Department's research activities span from basic to applied research over a wide range of materials: Comminution and flotation, extraction and deposition of metals and alloys by aqueous and fused slat electrolysis, Kinetics of metal extraction and refining processes, iron ore agglomeration, special refining processes for iron and steel; deoxidation and steel cleanliness, metal casting processes, physical and mathematical modelling of processes. Phase transformation, fracture mechanics, Powder Metallurgy.
Surface modifications, thermal spray, chemical vapour deposition, physical vapour deposition, sputtering, artificially layered materials superlattices, corrosion, high temperature oxidation, corrosion protection Semiconductor heterostructures and devices, MOCVD of II-IV materials, amorphous silicon. Ionically conducting polymers, dielectric applications, polymer-ceramics, bio-ceramics, and ceramics for magnetic and microwave applications, oxidic superconductors, shape forming. The Department of Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science is devoted to the design, creation and fundamental understanding of materials that are capable of enhancing the human experience.
The Department is well known for its academic program, its highly regarded faculty, and the high caliber of its students. Its continuing record of pioneering advances in engineering sciences and technologies stems from its ability to relate new developments and advances to engineering practices, and its close relationship with industry. These advances are then incorporated in current teaching and research programs.
The Department offers various academic programs and has a large research activity spanning many areas. The department offers four Year B.Tech. Program, five year Dual Degree (B.Tech. + M.Tech.) Program, M.Tech. Program and Ph.D. Program. The curriculum for these programs has been developed keeping in view the present technological status and future needs. It provides a strong background in conventional materials like ferrous and non-ferrous alloys as well as advanced materials like electronic materials, ceramics, composites and polymers. The Dual Degree Program with specializations in Metallurgical Process Engineering and Ceramics and Composites is the first of its kind in the country. The curriculum for this program has been formulated to train the students for leadership in both industry and academia. The highlights of this program are: Courses in Environmental Science, Technology Management, Materials Processing and Designing, Plant Engineering and Simulation and Optimization. Apart from the theoretical courses it also has a large Project Work component, Course Projects, Modelling and Simulation assignments, Seminars, BTPs, and the Masters Thesis - for a duration of 18 months.The M.Tech. Program has been designed keeping in view the needs of the industry. This program offers specializations in the areas of Process Metallurgy, Materials Science and Engineering, and Steel Technology. The M.Tech. Project is based on current industrial problems and requirements. The research in the department is focused on all kinds of materials including metals, polymers, ceramics, glasses, electronic materials, bio-materials, and composites, etc. The Department has the theoretical and experimental resources available to attack these scientific and engineering problems successfully. The research in the department is funded by organizations like the Department of Science and Technology, Board of Research in Nuclear Sciences, All India Council for Technical Education, Ministry of Human Resources Development, Steel Authority of India Ltd. and Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO).
The Department is equipped with excellent research facilities including materials processing facilities such as Electro-Slag Remelting units, Induction Melting units, a range of high temperature furnaces, Cold Isolatic Press, Hydraulic Press, Vacuum Hot Press, Planetary and Attritor Ball Mills, Ceramic Extruder, Plasma Spray Coating Units, Plasma Polymerisation Unit, Chemical Vapour Deposition Systems for oxides, nitrides and carbides, and many more. The characterisation facilities include SEM, Automated XRD, Texture Goniometer, Thermal Analysers (DSC/DTA), a range of Optical Microscopes, UTM, Microhardness Testers, Particle Size Analysers, Surface Area Analysers, Zeta Meter, etc. A complete range of compositional analysis systems including AAS, oxygen/sulfur/nitrogen analysers, UV visible Spectro-photometers are available in-house. Supporting equipments include a Departmental Local Area Network; Computing facilities include workstations and PCs.
