The Department of Mechanical Engineering at IIT Bombay, with its impressive faculty strength, research facilities and links with industry, continues to lead and expand activities in various directions.The department has considerable infrastructure spread over fifteen laboratories: Refrigeration, Airconditioning and Cryogenics, I.C. Engines and Combustion, Nuclear Engineering and Thermal Hydraulics, Steam Power Engineering, Fluid Power, Heat Transfer and Thermodynamics, Instrumentation, Control and Microprocessor Applications, Computational, Computer Aided Manufacturing, Machine Tools and Metrology, Metal Forming, Casting and Welding, Machine Design, Strength of Materials, Cell for Applied Research in Entrepreneurship, and a laboratory for Computer Graphics.
In addition, this is the parent department for two inter-disciplinary programs in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research (IEOR) and Energy Systems Engineering (ESE). As of January 1998, the department has 47 faculty, and approximately 210 B.Tech. students, 90 dual degree students, 140 M.Tech. students, and 40 Ph.D. students.
