The Department of Aerospace Engineering was established as the Department of Aeronautical Engineering in the year 1966-67 and celebrated its Silver Jubilee in the year 1991-92. The department has been involved with teaching and research activities in the various disciplines of the aeronautical and aerospace engineering. In the year 1992, the department implemented a new Undergraduate curriculum, keeping in view the requirements of an expanded space and missile programs of the country and also changed its name to Department of Aerospace Engineering. The department has maintained and nurtured its close association with the Aeronautical, the Aerospace and the Defense industries of the country through invited lectures, faculty participation and continuing education, in addition to providing high technology supports and inputs to the National projects such as the Light Combat Aircraft and the Integrated Guided Missile Development Project. The faculty of the department have been responsible for the transfer of aerospace technology as spin-off benefits to other fields of engineering.
The department offers BTech, MTech and PhD programs. The department has a wide range of experimental facilities and notable among these are: subsonic and supersonic wind tunnels, water tunnel, stability tunnel, Laser Doppler Velocimeter, analog and hydraulic simulation rigs, rotor dynamics and engine test rigs, Instron for structural testing and Autoclave for composites fabrications and Instrumented drop weight impact test apparatus.
The faculty of the department actively interacts with major aerospace R&D, organizations such as the NAL, HAL, ADA, ADE, DRDL, GTRE, ISAC, VSSC etc. and pursues research problems of mutual interest. The broad areas of the interest of the faculty are: CFD, Grid generation, Experimental aerodynamics, Flight vehicle stability and control, Robust control design, Dynamics of flexible space vehicles, Unsteady aerodynamics and aeroelasticity, Structural dynamics, Computer aided structural design, Composites and their characterization, Textile composites, Combustion studies, Rotor dynamics, Engine modeling and life estimation, Axial Compressor design and analysis.
A student pursuing a postgraduate program in Aerospace Engineering gets a multi-disciplinary perspective to many engineering problems.
