Shri C. B. Patel Research Centre for Chemistry and Biological Sciences was established in December 1991 as an Institute of Shri Vile Parle Kelavani Mandal. From the very beginning the Research Centre had a defined mission: to conduct inhouse applied research on problems of national importance and to carry out time bound, contractual R&D work for Industry. In addition to research, the Centre was also expected to train and develop scientists and technologists.

The first few years of the Centre were preparative years during which the essential infrastructure was established. It was in mid-1994, the first full time appointments of the research staff were made and within a span of about 4 years the Centre has touched several milestones. The Centre is now recognized by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), Government of India, as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (SIRO).

The Centre is also recognized by the University of Mumbai under Section 84 of the Maharashtra University Act as a Research Institute to register students for M.Sc (By Research) and Ph.D. programmes from 1996. The Centre has also started a One Year Post graduate Diploma in Clinical Research in collaboration with Clinical Research Academy of America, New Jersey, (U.S.A.). This first of its kind, program is comprehensively structured and designed to create a focused course of study for individuals seeking to position themselves for clinical research and pharmaceutical industry.

The Centre has completed several projects for the industry. The Centre has been internationally recognized for its work on Supercritical Fluid Extraction and Chromatography. Using the same technique the Centre has developed a patented process for the extraction of active compounds from neem plant.

The Research Centre has now established an Independent Ethics Committee (IEC) that evaluates protocols from MNC's for studies involving human volunteers. This committee is registered under the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), registration number being IRB00008365.

In addition to the above, as part of the social responsibility towards the Society, the Centre, the Research Centre participates actively in conducting camps for the detection of Thalassaemia, a genetic blood disorder. The Thalassaemia detection unit of the Research Centre has analysed from 2000-2001 till today more than a lakh blood samples from the College going students, with a view to detect Thal-trait (thal minor). This unit works in collaboration with Mumbai Thalassaemic Society (MTS), Parent Association Thalassaemia Unit Trust (PATUT) and Rotary and Lions clubs. The goal of the Centre is to lessen the burden of thalassaemia in the Indian Community.
