The Baha'i Vocational Institute for Rural Women was established in 1985 for the upliftment of rural and tribal women living in small communities in the districts around Indore. During the first few years of operation, it focused primarily on developing income-generating skills like producing small mats, incense-sticks, dry leaf cups, candles, chalk-sticks and handloom weaving. The organic growth of the Institute has enabled it to develop a comprehensive curriculum that empowers the women with the knowledge and skills they need to improve their lives and the lives of their families, and the communities in which they live. The programmes of the Institute are run in an area within a radius of 200 kilometres from the campus, which is located on a six acre plot on the outskirts of Indore. As one of four development training Institutes under the general supervision of the National Spiritual Assembly of the Baha'is of India, the Institute has access to a wide range of expertise and materials from elsewhere in India and also from international sources. Physical facilities at the campus include a well-equipped workshop-cum-classroom, a dormitory with a kitchen and dining area, an office and staff quarters. The Institute has electrical supply, water supply, sewerage system, telephone and access to fax and telex. There are extensive gardens which provide an excellent learning environment for the students, staff and guests. The Institute has a jeep for its outreach work in the communities.
The Institute conducts the following types of residential training programmes every year for needy, deserving and willing rural and tribal women. Nursing mothers are encouraged to join. Transportation, food, accommodation, training and training materials are provided free of charge to the trainees. Two courses of three months for 25-30 women per course for community workers. One course of one month for 10-15 Area Coordinators. These are selected from the community workers and receive advanced training to help in the coordination of community development work.
One 10 - 15 day course for 10 married couples in family life skills such as mutual partnership, sharing parental responsibilities and joint decision making through consultation. Alcoholism, domestic violence and superstitions are discussed in terms of the ramifications for children, the family unit and the communities.
