The Cochin College was founded on July 15,1967, in response to an increasing demand for higher education in Cochin. The College, which stands as a symbol of the hopes and aspirations of the public of Cochin, marks an important milestone in the crowded history of the commercial town of Cochin. Apart from giving instruction to students according to the prescribed syllabus the College also aims at the full development of the latent potentialities of the young scholars. Started as a Junior College in 1967 it was elevated to the stature of a first grade College in 1978.
The Cochin College, Cochin is affiliated to the Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, Kerala. It is the only college in the Western part of Cochin and provides quality education in Commerce, Science and Arts. Though started as a college to provide education at the Pre-Degree level, it has in course of time been upgraded to a first grade college and further to a post graduate college. The College is known for its highly accomplished faculty with more than half the teachers possessing research degrees and a few of them in the threshold of acquiring them.

The Chemistry department of the college has the unique distinction of producing the first rank in the Mahatma Gandhi University for a continuous peroid of last 7 years.

The College has a place of pride in the society in the sense that it has helped to promote education among the Muslim community especially among women who come from highly conservative homes.

The College symbolises the hopes and aspirations of the public of Cochin and is a milestone in the crowded history of the Commercial town of Cochin.Slowly but steadily the institution grew into a post-gradute college in 1995 from its humble beginning as a junior college in 1967. The college was accredited with B+ ( equivalent to five star ) in January 2004.
Council. This college is affiliated to the Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam and offers various courses in both Science and Humanities at the degree level such as Physics, Chemistry, Zoology, Botany, Commerce, Economics, English Literature and Mathematics. At the P.G. level the College offers M.Com, with specialisation in Financial Management, M.Sc Physics with Electronics, M.Sc Chemistry and M.Sc Micro Biology.
